accept Bitcoins at your store, but offer a 25% discount when paying with them. this will encourage people to switch, and drive the price up.

Oh! Well, it's a good way to promote bitcoins to mass but I am not sure if all members will support this idea

But at some shops profit margin hits around 10-20%. It could hurt shop owners , even if it would temporally lift price a bit. After awhile shops would be falling down, unless we assume growth of price for over 25% at this point. Thats some kind of risk and obviously it is liberal decision of any one interested. It can carry some kind of risk with it, but also kinda nice gain.

No action needed of that kind Adoption will happen naturally due to ease of use and cost savings to merchants and buyers

If bitcoin is a commodity or not legal tender, it's just like offering discounts to people paying in coupons. Actually as bitcoin is considered deflatory, a discount incentive has to be added to make people part with their coins as long as bitcoin is perceived as appreciating in value over time. When prices are stable (in the course of a year) bitcoin will function better as a payment system and worse as a speculation vehicle.

I've said this before, that in order for people to adopt BTC there needs to be some sort of advantage over using their credit/debit card.
For example if Overstock started offering free shipping on all bitcoin orders, more people would surely acquire some BTC in order to take advantage of the offer. That would get lots of people interested in using BTC. Currently if you dont already have BTC, there is no real point in going through the hassle of getting some just to go make an order on Overstock.

Good luck trying to convince business to do this I've seen this work when it's a community. For example, some small towns or areas have their own currency to keep the businesses all propped up and this is driven through the business board in the area. bitcoin is a bit decentralized - i don't see this working on a larger scale. but maybe you can prove me wrong. I'd accept bitcoin for a 2% discount (cheaper than credit card processing fees).

Very pleased after reading, that its definitely one of the best ideas i have heard to promote bitcoins but as a matter of fact many people already do that and now to increase the adoption of bitcoins the banks have to come in the picture!!

So "pay" people to use something? people will realize soon that they want to use bitcoin and you do not need to pay them for it.

Many websites, hosting companies and any digital businesses can easily do the 25% discount, since the product cost is so low.
