The first cryptocurrency you should hold should be bitcoin. You should also look at smart contract based coin and focus on buying the one you believe in for as long as you can!  My Altcoin  choices are Ethereum,  Litcoin Dash and Monero!

Bitcoin as the main investment in cryptocurrency and I think it is enough if you only choose bitcoin than the other coin. But if you want to diversify the investment in crypto, then ethereum will be the next choice to invest besides the old coin as you mention. But don't forget that the new coin will be potential to be the investment as long as you can choose the right coin.

As you rightly put it,  Bitcoin is good enough for investment in cryptocurrency.  I found out many do not see bitcoin as investment,  they assume bitcoin is meant for payment alone in a decentralized manner.  In addition to using Bitcoin as a payment,  it can equally be used to store value and keep your wealth for your unborn generations!

Instead of taking peoples advice i would suggest you to do your own research when it comes to investing in crypto currencies. Select few coins that have potential and under valued. Filter out the coins that are clone/shit coins. Start analyzing those selected coins and find out their potential in the future. Since you are trying to hold your investment for long term, i would suggest investing on coins that are popular like Bitcoin, doge coin, litecoin, eth and strartis.

absolutely right, choosing a coin that is in the top 10 can reduce the risk that must be faced when investing,even though there are some coins outside the top 10 that might have good potential but I think there is nothing wrong with playing safe

In my own opinion, it would bitcoin. Since bitcoin is the most long running coin of all time; I think that it is hard for other coins to defeat it. And also it will still useful after five years since many people are starting to invest with it. For the other three it is up to you to decide, but all I can say that always put bitcoin on the top of your list.
