My Guide For Getting Merit!

#1 Understand Merit

Merit was first introduced to reduce spam, and encourage quality posting. As there are many people here who are only here to earn money, so the administrator of the forum (Theymos) implemented it as a requirement for ranks, so those who spam and shit post to get to the higher ranks now needed to post quality.

To get merit someone must send it to you on one of your posts. When someone sends you 1 merit, you get 0.5 sMerit, sMerit is merit you can send to others, whereas the other 0.5 you cannot send to others.

There are users called 'Merit Sources' who can create merit from nothing, and are chosen by Theymos.

Here is how you can become a Merit source:

1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

#2 What not to do

• Attempt to buy merit. You will 99 percent of the time get scammed, and is highly looked down upon.
• Do not reply to spam mega threads, that have thousands of replys, which normally results in you just contributing nothing. You can view many of the main spam threads here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1649348.0

#3 How to make a post properly

First, what you want to do before asking a question or sharing news, is search into google to see, and make sure there is no other thread about it. This will just make duplicate content and will contribute nothing.

You want to have a keyword, as if I just wanted to search to find the main merit thread for bitcointalk, you dont want to do:

Instead, use the bitcointalk keyword:

bitcointalk merit

Once you have verified that there is no duplication, then you can begin writing.

You want to make sure you make your writing as clear as possible, and make sure it contributes something, and not just a one line post.

Then, give that click on 'Post'  

If you do not get merit on that post, try again. Merit should not be the only reason you post, I hope most of those out there really want to contribute to the forum, and not just use it for making money, but I suppose that will not be the case always.

Your first merit is indeed very exciting, and certainly encourages me to keep posting quality, but maybe thats just me.

Just don't try too hard and post based on what you understand on the subject matter. The thing with newbie is that they're desperate to earn that 1 merit, so they plagiarized and copy others work. But forum members are very smart, because they quickly scan your post history. If we found that you previously shit posting with one liner, then suddenly you became a article writer then its obvious that you copy your post from somewhere else and that's the end of your career here.

Have you followed your own advice and searched for merit guides/tips? As you said, posting duplicate content doesn't bring anything new to the table, and you certainly won't get merit for this.

I don`t even think that there`s any guide in order to get merits. In its essence, merit is a subjective assessment. To write any instructions for this is to assume the reaction of other participants to your posts. Such hypothesis shouldn`t be unfounded, it`s necessary that it has empirical reinforcement (if you, of course, claim that your guide is regarded as qualified). It`s hardly possible to talk about the experimental justification of instructions written by a user who himself has currently received only 1 merit. You cannot give recommendations to other people if they don`t work in your own practice.

Each post is perceived differently by different people. Post can be useful for one person and useless for another. So when You write a post no need to think about Merit.

You should try to convey to people what you want to say in simple language. This is My opinion.

At first you write a post in order to share with people your knowledge or any observations or just interesting information and then if they find this post useful you will be merited.
It’s not worth writing a post just to try to get merit, it's not work like that.

It's simple but need time. Writing constructive, creative, high-quality posts, then you will get merits sooner or later. The most important things is be helpful in the forum to help others solve their problems, or at least give them hints, links for more details, etc. Furthermore, merits will be given for high quality posts, but it's also a game of probability. Therefore, you should not pay too much attention on merits, just keep being helpful, you will get merits in the future for sure. Don't worry about merit points.

Instead of thinking you are posting for merit just think you are posting constructively. I know it's going to be hard for many lower ranked people and newbies to attain higher ranks now but if yous persevere people will give merit where it is due.
Just remember to spend your smerit too and spread the merit where you think is deserved too.

There are tons and tons of guides on "how to get merits" from accounts who do not have many merits. I would love to see one of these guides from a member who organically grew from a newbie to a legendary.

I guess you mean during the lifespan of the Merit System, requiring gained merit as part of the path to reach the Legendary rank. If that is the case, then strictly speaking nobody has reached Legendary rank formally, since the merit system has been around for less than nine months, and you need just over two years at least in terms of activity to be able to go from Newbie to Legendary (1k needed merits aside).

Nevertheless, some people around have manages to earn the 1k needed merits requirement in this nine month period, although the numbers are few and should be read as an exception and not a norm. You can take a look at this thread to get an idea: [Merit Analysis] "Self Made" high ranked users based on earned merit.

The main driver nevertheless is putting time into your posts and effort. That is how to at least opt to being merited. The speed at which you gain merit, and the quantity, will vary with many factors that are content related (topic, originality, depth, informational, wittiness, grammar command, post placement, etc.). All these factors are important, but come in second place to effort.

First listen to some advice's here it could help you a lot. Second follow some of the @DdmrDdmr topic about merit and merit distribution, and look where is most given section for merit. He have very good explanations and tables with this. Start from there you will see that you could get some point in where to get it and on which topic you can be good, maybe good.

If you want to see something good follow his steps then (i mean on DdmrDdmr) he has already enough merit for legendary.

That is actually great idea, one flaw here is that you can see from what legendary member get his merit.
I mean, its easy to read it, no need to decribe it in reality

By the way, 1000 is a lot of merits but as long as you create meaningful good quality posts that moment will definitely come.
