HandMade: expensive or cheap?

My name is Oksana (5Ksana) and I am a professional master of creating jewelry, elements of decor, production of clothes in individual orders in different techniques and much more. I try that my works were beautiful and touched hearts of people what they would be wanted to be repeated or got for themselves, for decoration of the apartment, for the beloved kids, etc. I have a degree in "Design" .In this area I am working more than 15 years.

A talented seamstress makes $15-$20 an hour in the US, and my prices reflect that. A similar employee at a factory in China would make pennies.
I can’t compete with sweatshop prices, and I don’t want to.

People expecting big-box prices for handmade goods. And the sad truth is, most of the time those handmade goods are underpriced just to compete with this mindset. These customers don’t see the hours of design, standing in the fabric store deciding between fabrics, emails back and forth if someone wants a custom piece, and the hours of learning and refining the craft. It’s said that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert on something. Since that first sewing class through today, I have accrued much more than 10,000 hours of sewing. When you buy handmade, you’re not just buying a dress or a purse. You’re buying the entire handmade experience. The next time you’re considering buying a handmade item, remember there’s a woman sitting behind a sewing machine in her basement, surrounded by mountains of fabric and years of experience, putting a piece of her soul into that item, hoping that you will get as much joy from the finished product as she gets from making it, and maybe she can pay some bills too.

It depends on what product you are going to buy. But mainly yeah, handmade is more expensive.

I agree with you. Craftmanship done by hand should be more expensive than industrial mass produced products. First of all the quality is usually completely different, secondly the time invested in the product is usually much higher for handmade productions. Then on top of that the expertise needed to do the things yourself are important too. If we would all just buy things from the big companies than all the small business would disappear. Personally I try to buy quality and not quantity.

Handmade is expensive, but that will depend on the product. If the product is made for limited edition and only made handmade, then yes, it will be more expensive. Many people will look at the product as a rare item that is not available for mass production. Only people who know about the product will understand the uniqueness.

Usually yes hand made is more expensive if you show and explain why, what fabric and other materials you used, how much time put in to make sure your product is high quality and last for long time etc.
People must understand what they are paying for.

Obviously it depends on the proposed product but in general hand-made things still have a higher cost but it also seems right to me because effort and creativity must be rewarded

every handmade has a selling value that depends on what materials are used and the level of complexity of manufacture...
in my city handicrafts, handmade art is not very popular because the average resident here does not really love art, in contrast to developed countries which still have a lot of people who really love art.

I am always a Fan of Handmade things so for me it is not the price that matters but the dedication and the skills put in the items i am going to Buy.

so for me it is not the Money that needs to be aware but the beauty inside .
