Hi guys - so im having issues...

i decided to build another rig this time using Asus 290's not X.

i have built many many rigs based on 280x with not many issues but this time im stumped.

so 3 x Asus 290 all being detected as i would expect running via windows 7 64bit in cgminer 3.7.2

i came to write the BAT file and the issues start, as soon as i enter an intensity number over stock(Cool i get HW errors galore.

Everyone seems to be running these cards at 20 with no problems....

if i run without an intensity number specified everything runs fine... everything else is tweaked.

problem is it is only hashing at 30kh/s or something like that...

ideas?

drivers 13.2 suite - i thought this could be my problem, but have used this fine on every build i have done

Post your config here.

But regardless, since you used to handle 280x I'd venture to guess you're using -g 2 ?  If that's the case than R9 290 are using -g 1 and with that you can also increase the TC (20481, 24500, 32765 works for most pretty well) and after that you can increase your -i.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have actually stripped back the entire config to realise it was the intensity causing the issues...

but i had already changed the -g 1 after spending the last few hours on google trying to fix this before posting here...

my config is purely stock right now - its simply when i change the intensity it goes crazy - stock intensity is 8 - even trying the 280x "normal" of 13 causes issues so you can imagine what happens when i go -I 20  Shocked

try using xIntensity in CGMiner 3.7.3 or SGMiner 4.1.0

intensity is a direct multipier. meaning.

Int   Threads
13   8192
14   16384
15   32768
16   65536
17   131072
18   262144
19   524288
20   1048576

the jump at 20 basically overloads the cards.

using xInt allows you to tune it because its a nuliplier of your shader count. The 290 has a shader count of 2560. so an equivilent Xint in comparison to Int 19 is

Int   Threads
19   524288

524288 / 2560 = 204.8.

i currently have mine at an xInt of 256 as it a nice mulitplier of 4.

xInt   Threads
256   655360

good luck!

Also, as a reminder, your thread concurrency is usually best at a multiplier of your shader count  plus 1 so 2560*N+1 mine currently set at a mulitplier of 12. (2560*12+1) = 30721.

Intensity isn't the cause but rather the symptom, so it has to be something else. Try SGminer (4 or 4.1) and see if it's working well there.

I remember when I got my first R9 290 I couldn't get it to hash properly using cgminer (wouldn be stuck at 500~) and when I switched to sgminer (with exact same settings) everything worked just fine.

guys thanks for the replies - downloaded SGminer and GUIminer so will give them a go shortly and let you know the outcomes...

thanks again - and fingers crossed

ok so update time -

guiminer - never used it before - quite nice actually - however out of 3 290's:

0 @ 250kh
1 @ 500kh
2 @ 250kh

and with this i am unable to see HW errors etc which scared me a little.... this was using the stock settings within the programme on high and low versions for the 290...

.....

so i tried SGminer 4.0.0 - seem to be having the same problems as with CGminer - thought i had it working all over 800kh but then i saw the HW screen... and turned it off quickly  Shocked

can anyone post a config i can copy and paste to see if or what im doing wrong here...

frustrating thing is i have several other rigs all purring away but 280x - i just can fathom the 290

I am running 3x R9 290 and using SGminer 4.1.0

"xintensity" : "111,111,111",
"worksize" : "256,256,256",
"kernel" : "zuikkis,zuikkis,zuikkis",
"lookup-gap" : "2,2,2",
"thread-concurrency" : "20481,20481,20481",
"gpu-memclock" : "1250,1250,1250",
"gpu-engine" : "1015,1015,1015",
"gpu-threads" : "1,1,1",
"expiry" : "10",
"scan-time" : "5",
"queue" : "0",
"gpu-dyninterval" : "7",
"gpu-platform" : "0",
"log" : "5",
"no-pool-disable" : true,
"temp-overheat" : "85,85,85",
"temp-cutoff" : "90,90,90",
"gpu-powertune" : "20,20,20",
"kernel-path" : "/usr/local/bin"

xintensity 111 equates to -i 18~ so depending on the pool you're mining at, feel free to change it, for example: xint 400 equates to -i 20~.

Also, depending on which memory type you have you might need to change your clocks speeds to get optimal speeds.

thanks for this buddy - just changed up to 8gb ram to see if that helps - and sods law both the pools i use are down for work... so i will wait half an hour before i try this.

quick question though how do i input the xintensity... i use BAT files so ordinarily i would simply do -I 20 ... and for Xintensity???

so another update - Starscreamer your helping me get closer...

im unable to enter the xintensity into my bat for some reason it wont load.. (tried variations of -Xi, XI, xi)

but doing it directly into SGminer and doing the 111 you suggested has reduced the HW errors but not stopped them...

instead of getting in the hundreds in a few seconds its in the 20's....

still not where it needs to be.

interestingly i noticed that my gpu memclock and engine settings where not changed when i went into Change settings within SGminer as they normally would be in my BAT file...

Oh also forgot to add, i have now downloaded 4.1.0 and this is what the above was done on...

i am getting seriously annoyed with this now... never had this many problems setting up a rig.  Angry

Could be -xI , not sure if it's case sensitive or not. Anyway, I'm not sure it's -xI at all , since I'm using a cfg file to run my miner (easier for me to see all the settings) and there aren't any short keys there.

What memory type do you have? You might need to change to clock speeds since mine are based off HynixAFR.

Also, you might wanna try and delete your bin files.

Edit: Forgot to mention that most HW errors are caused due to to low TC value, do you have "setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100" "setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1" ?

yeah bin files i delete everytime its something i have always done on my rigs...

mem type im not sure - but i have also tried to run it at stock memclock and engine...

i am giving up for the night - my mrs will be home shortly and i have been on this since 10 this morning - so 9 hrs is enough for one day.

maybe i will try the conf file instead of BAT and see if that helps...

will try again tomorrow..  Roll Eyes

and yes i have those at the top of my BAT...

this is why i am so confused - everything appears to be ok, just shed loads of HW errors....

maybe i will stick to 280x for the next rig... these i can build and have running within an hour  Grin

Try increasing your TC value before you go to sleep. With 6GB you should be able to run higher TC than what I wrote.

When i tried to use what appears to be the standard 290 TC CGminer would not boot - buffer problems.... think it was 32765 or something in this order

I had since put another 2gb in so running 8gb now.... worked fine using the TC in your setup - but will try boosting it in the morning now...

Time to be nice to the mrs and daughter and explain what i have been doing all day is worth while and super productive...

Its hard enough to explain why i spend so much money on the "ROOM HEATERS"  Grin

i thought it was worth a shot, just took it from another rig to see what difference it made... if any.

lots of ideas in my head, so back to the drawing board in the morning....
