Hi,
I have been out of mining for about 4 years now, I really want to get back into it and have a little bit of a budget ($750), I used to run 4 x AMD Radeon HD 6950, I loved it but when asics started taking over scrypt I stopped.
So I am wondering if its better to go GFX card route or ASIC? I am not looking for pure profit but also variety and what will give me a broader mining field.
If I go GFX what would you suggest based on value -> profit?, ASIC, would you suggest any? I am looking more at the altcoin scene.
Thank you for any help!

I have AMD 580 8gb for mining ETH.
Getting 31 m/h on each, its been working fine.
For me is a good investment.
Im thinking about Asics as well, but not sure about it yet.

ASIC's will limit you on the coins you can mine, you get a wider option with GPU's. I think a safer bet would be GPU mining to start. You can always upgrade to ASIC's later. Also, check this out. https://whattomine.com/

You can use up this calculator too. https://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency. Profitability would always matter on your own electricity cost and with that amount ill do prefer to buy GPU's.

the 580's are alright on cryptonight too, OK on Lyra, so quite versatile. On the other hand, all the AI offerings only accept Nvidia cards, so a few cheap 1070s might be worth investigating for that and X16.
I think if I were buying now on a budget I'd probably build two rigs, one 580s and one 1070s. eBay prices are very good right now, although profits are tiny too, so don't be expecting to make your fortune.

Buy crypto when everyone are sacred...
Nahh. It’s all overpriced yet. When we see difficulty stop rising maybe then will it be “time to buy”. I’m beginning to question if it’s ever the right time to buy. Why do I want to donate my hard earned money to someone I don’t know overseas. Now that USA added nice hearty 27.6% tariff on the miners I’d like to see just how this bodes on the decentralization war. I’d say it’s a knife in the back. I’m looking forward to another drop about half in price. Which if your looking to buy miners might want to wait. Someone with millions in equip is about to have a fire sale. Welcome to crypto. Where you think you have a grip of it but then you realize you don’t have a clue. BR

I wouldn't buy asics at the moment because there is a chance that some coins will become asic resistant again. My vote for GPU in anyway, at least you can sell them at the end or use them for gaming, let's start: 1. I suggest you to buy Nvidia GPUs because they consume less energy and you can use them more widely than AMD cards, I wouldn't prioritize ethereum mining by buying rx 580. 2. If you want to buy GPUs in possibly cheap prices, check this website -> nowinstock.net 3. To help you in building of mining rigs and have a thoughtd about which pc parts like motherboards, rams and etc are good for your rig, visit this website -> 1stminingrig.com 4. To check what's currently the most profitable to mine with your GPU, overcloacked hashrates and electricity prices, check -> whattomine.com Hope I helped you Best regards shield132

Thank You all, Really appreciated. The links above will be very useful and yeah the mining is more of a versatile thing than putting all my hash in one steady crypto. NVidia are cheaper on ebay since the 2080 came out. I will mess around and see what I get best results from card wise.

If you’re in North America, eBay can be a good place to find cheap cards used, with some RX 5XX and RX 4XX cards going near $100 in used condition and GTX 1060 6GBs going for around $150 used in some cases. Just watch out for low-feedback scam sellers (a common sign is no seller feedback or seller and buyer feedback from a long time ago), and you’ll be alright. I no longer sell on eBay due to their horrible seller protection, but it’s mostly safe as a buyer. It’s just the scam sellers that waste your time in the end.

If you have free power, you will probably ROI quicker buying used ASICs on Ebay (s9, l3+, etc). If you dont, avoid. If you have decided on GPUs, I'd strongly encourage NVidia over AMD. What shield132 said above is correct: just more efficient and versatile than AMD cards, and I wouldnt count on mining Ethash for much longer. Besides, AMD cards are always ... in my experience... a lot of tinkering time. I have 3 AMD rigs, and 3 Nvidia rigs. The Nvidia rigs I basically never have to mess with except to do routine maintenence (cleaning dust, etc). The AMD rigs though, I have to reinstall something on them every few weeks. If anything ever breaks, it's on an AMD rig. Mainly I dont mind that because tinkering with the rigs is something I actually enjoy doing...but just know what you are getting into.

Thanks, Yeah I had an AMD rig before and was the same + the SDK opencl pack. At the time Nvidia were not even near what AMD could do for mining but now it looks to have switched a bit. I think I am going to get 3 x 1070's, I have the other bits although DDR3 ram set and not DDR4 but im not sure that will make a difference on the mining side or if the 1070's need it. I have some metal GPU frame also which I would like to utilise. Then I may go for another 1070 and have 4 in the rig. My main fun when mining is finding a new coin, speculative mining

If you can find some 6gb samsung 1060s, that would be good for what you are looking to do (speculative mining) as well, lower price point.

I suggest going with 1070ti's for a bit more than 1070's. The 1070ti's hash a bit better and are good with electricity. But 1070's if found for cheap would be solid also. I just picked up 5 great condition EVGA 1070ti's for $290 each shipped.

You should also take new NVIDIA RTX20XX into consideration. They are not the best choice at the moment, but a new versions of mining software will be optimized for RTX architecture and profitability will be better. Or you can buy a few used AMD RX570

BTC no more than 6k by end of 2019. ETH no more than 300$ by end 2019. Huge market manipulation, huge amount of scammers and hypers.

Why? I am not really all that bothered about making pure profit. I like to mine coins and hodl, something that could potentially make profit in the future. Mining is what keeps PoW networks secure.
