ATM where you can both buy bitcoins and easily cash out bitcoins without the need to use third party processors
like Bitpay or similar sounds like a dream come true for americans
and for adoption worldwide as well , since if the experiment goes well (as it should) many more countries would want to do the same

It's not that difficult to be honest. It only requires a software/firmware upgrade and that's it. You use your card to purchase whatever amount of Bitcoin that the machine allows you to (legally) purchase, and you'll get a receipt with a private key printed on it. Considering that when you purchase Bitcoin with your card they technically have all your personal information already, it saves people a ton of verification hassle as well.

The article title however is very click-bait oriented. I think that in reality if we can see 10% of that figure deployed, it's a major achievement already. You can't just turn every ATM into a BATM, especially not when you take into consideration that each state has different policies you have to abide by.

In the end, more BATM's means more average joe level of accessibility, which is a good thing.

From the technical side they say only software upgrade will be required, so this should not be a problem. But this type of ATMs is only for purchase of BTC, which means that the potential buyer must find another way in case he wants to sell coins - whether it's two-way crypto ATM or exchange. I do not know is there any technical barrier to make all ATMs for two-way trading, but even just the possibility of buying BTC on thousands of regular ATMs is a great news.

It really could. I think one barrier to bitcoin adoption is accessibility. A lot of people probably get scared off because they have to deal with exchanges and KYC that they might not be too familiar with or trust. Buying from ATMs is much simpler, and if you could buy them from regular ones I think it would do wonders for adoption and pique many people's interest if they saw that as an option.

I'm not a technician but there's probably no reason why most ATMs couldn't be used to dish out bitcoins. As per the article all it requires is a software upgrade, but this may be costly for ATM operators to implement and might not be something they see the value in. You can already top up your phone and pay bills at many current ATMs so implementing a QR code to be printed out or scanned shouldn't be a big issue and they will then just probably work the same way current bitcoin ATMs do.

I have been asking for this kind of partnership for years and somebody listened.  In my country, people can use ATMs to buy data bundles for their mobile phones and they can pay their traffic fines with the ATMs, but they cannot buy bitcoins. 

Conventional ATMs just need a scanner to scan in the QR code for the recipients Bitcoin address or alternatively they provide the Bitcoin address and the customer will have to sweep those coins to their own Bitcoin address, when they get home. 

This should have been done years ago.

In my country, people can use ATMs to buy data bundles for their mobile phones and they can pay their traffic fines with the ATMs, but they cannot buy bitcoins. 

May I ask where you come from? As a western spoiled brat I get surprised time on time again reading about how superior ATMs and vending machines outside my own little world are.

People might think western countries are ahead in terms of technology and everything, but I'm more and more convinced that this isn't the case at all. We're lazy and think that everything we have right now is good enough to last.

The real advancements seem happen in countries with less economical power with how people themselves and businesses are forced to innovate in an attempt to better their situation and living standards.
