“If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product” has never been truer. These days every product we take for granted from all the major technology companies is free, but the true cost is high. Every piece of data you put on social media, your blog, or a search engine is mined and sold to advertisers, they know more about you than you do. But is there a better way?
The father of the Internet Tim Berners-Lee certainly believes there is a better way. With the advent of the Solid project he aims to radically change the future of the internet, redesigning the way applications work today resulting in true ownership of your data and improved privacy.
Solid introduces the concept of PODs of data. A POD is your personal identity defined by a URL, and a set of socially linked data. This data is entirely within your control. You define who can see your data, what applications can access your data. This is game changing, putting all your data and control in your hands. Want to swap social networks, simple, remove access to the old application, grant access to the new application and hey presto all your data is now available in the latest application. No messy data migrations, no starting from scratch. This really does encourage you to try new applications.
It’s inevitable that the big tech of Silicon Valley will start offering POD technology for free, but with the same drawbacks as today, you are the product, and you are being sold. We believe in the decentralised future where you are in control of your data.
So what are we doing? We will be one of the first commercial POD providers, but with an important difference. We will be providing a commercial service at minimal cost where we guarantee that we will never mine your data, we won’t be throwing ads in your face. Plain and simple, you pay for our identity and storage platform, and we will look after your data for you, putting you in charge.
