Today, my "Recent Transactions" column showed the receipt of 0.00000888 BTC, sent to the address which I labeled "MTGOX Receive" and used to transfer BTC from MTGOX. I did not initiate this transaction. Was this transaction possibly related to MTGOX Civil Rehabilitation procedure? I have submitted my claim.

nah many spambots look through the blockchain and find old addresses and randomly splashes some dust amounts to random people. many spammers do it purely because its more costly to move/spend the dust than how much the dust is worth (4sat/byte tx will eat up all that 888sat) thus making people irritated when they now have extra dust that gets picked up when they next transact. costing them more in fees
as for mtgox civil suit from what i believe of the MTGox civil rehabilitation scheme. is that all mtgox balances will be converting any btc balance to a fiat balance of the final day of mtgox operations (under $250/btc) and then send of cheques/wire transfers in fiat.(minus 'costs')
do not expect whatever coin you put into mtgox to get out at any fair recent market value do not expect whatever coin you put into mtgox to get out as coin do not expect even the market value of 2014. (after lawyers and advocates take their fee's)
expect pennys on the dollar and expect it in fiat form not btc form

There is a possibility that you receive a reward or bonus from MTGOX. Have you participated with MTGOX or have you signed up with them? If yes, then that will be the reason why you receive a transaction with MTGOX.

the op said it was not an address FROM/belonging to mtgox. its an address the OP owns himself which the OP labeled himself as an address he used to get funds. which he intented to have as the receiving address he would only intend to use to receive funds from mtgox. but in this case received from some random address... into his own address he labaled

I have generated and labeled this address in 2013 and am clueless who sent me BTC today. Obviously, it can't be MTGOX which ceased to function in 2014. Thanks for all the responses but I am still worried that my wallet is about to be emptied and the receipt of a negligible amount will be followed by total withdrawal.

I do beg you to explain: 1) What do spammers gain by giving away "dust to random people"? 2) Why do people get irritated when they receive "extra dust"? The last time I transferred BTC was in 2013. At the time, I paid no fees. I don't know how transaction fees work now but I presume one chooses the transfer amount. For example, if I want to transfer 5 BTC, having extra 0.000001 BTC in my wallet would not affect the fee.

I don't know for sure why they sent you some Satoshi, but I've read an article about bitcoin spam and maybe that's the answer you're looking for. https://99bitcoins.com/people-spam-bitcoin/

For example, if I want to transfer 5 BTC, having extra 0.000001 BTC in my wallet would not affect the fee. 1) disruption! it is not just about the inconvenience that they cause for that one person who has to either pay a higher fee to spend that dust or every time manually deselect that UTXO but also it is about adding a new UTXO and make inconvenience for full nodes. 2) even in 2013 you had to pay a fee and 0 fee transactions were lower priority and could take a long time to be confirmed. now the difference is that blocks are full so a 0 fee transaction is so low priority that it will never confirm and that is not even considering the fact that majority of nodes don't even accept it. also with fees sometimes going higher having a new tx_in would mean paying a higher fee. check out: https://coinb.in/#fees

I have several addresses with "dust" being dumped from unknown sources. I have also seen people doing this on well known addresses that was made public and they use that as a "graffiti wall" to advertise some service or just to make a statement. People do the strangest things and I seldom question silly behaviour, because I accept that some people are just crazy. https://news.bitcoin.com/people-keep-sending-satoshi-nakamoto-bitcoin/

It might be the voucher or bonus given by the MTgox. There is a slight possibility that it came in the wrong address. And another frightening possibility is it might be from any scammer or hacker. So just be cautious.

Not knowing how the transaction happened, it is good that you take action to clear up your account because that maybe lost security and your fund might be in danger. Be cautious about it because scammer is everywhere. You do not know where it comes, so just be cautious. Nothing to do but to secure your funds.

Actually, it would. That is additional unspent output you add to your outgoing transaction and thus you increase the transaction size. If the original 5BTC transaction consisted of spending only one unspent output, adding the second one increases transaction size twice! Anyway, even if not twice, the size gets inreased, and the fee is paid for every byte, so the fee gets increased too. You might try to get away with setting your fee to 0 satoshi per byte, but chances are huge that transaction would never get confirmed.

Recently there has been some instances similar to this. I think its spamming. They send a very low amount of coins to an account with their website's name as an advertisement.

Besides advertising and simple spam, there is another option: Linking of multiple addresses to one entity.
In such a scenario, the attacker sends small amounts to multiple addresses. He then monitors these addresses and if he sees that this dust UTXO is being used together with different addresses (either through using them in a single transaction or trough consolidating), he will be able to link those addresses together to one entity in control of these keys.
The only way to avoid such a potential de-anonymization is to 'block' the UTXO, so that the wallet won't be using it (it wouldn't be worth using it, since its roughly enough to pay for the fees itself).
