I have an old laptop that has a maximum limit of 256mb ram and 20gb hard disk. I cannot install Ubuntu because the machine does not quite meet the hardware requrements. Will Electrum run on either Lubuntu or Xubntu (lighter versions)?

I haven't tried it personally, but seeing as I was able to run Electrum on Puppy Linux (a really tiny distro) without any issues, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Thanks very much. If it works on Puppy, I'm sure it will work on either Lubuntu or Xubuntu.

I have been running it on Lubuntu for a year or so without problems. (Though with 4Gb memory and god knows how much HD space)

If I've said anything amusing and/or informative and you're feeling generous:

The difference between Lubuntu or Xubuntu and Ubuntu is mainly in the desktop environment they are using (and some more applications which has nothing to do with Electrum and its pre-requirements). Everything else lying underneath is the same. Technically you can install Ubuntu and then remove the DE and install LXDE to have LUBUNTU or install LUBUNTU and then install Unity to have UBUNTU, and so on.

Ubuntu uses Unity DE which  is based on Gnome
Lubuntu is based on LXDE environment (just FYI this is the fastest variant)
Xubuntu uses XFCE

You can find all of them here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/690/what-is-the-difference-between-ubuntu-and-its-derivatives

Further reading about DE if anyone was interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment
