Here is a small poll about different ways someone can learn about bitcoin.

I'd like to show that we should not try too hard to promote bitcoin.  IMO people who are interested in improving the current monetary system find out about bitcoin by themselves.  So my guess is most people will answer #3, as I do.

I learned about it on 4chan. Someone was complaining about how they weren't generating any coins. (They hadn't downloaded all the blocks yet, IIRC.)

I learnt about it on a chan, too. This kind of viral marketing is the best approach imo. Just spread the word every now and then and let people discuss …

Security Now! podcast as well.

Edit: Actually, I heard about it a year ago on a chan BBS thing, but I tried to find out what it was and couldn't find anything concrete as to what Bitcoin was supposed to be. Now I wish I had put more than 10 minutes into finding out about it - I could be a thousandaire!

I think I have the best story--saw it mentioned in a tweet by the Pirate Party of Oklahoma.

I learnt about it in the first Slashdot post.  Took me about 2 weeks to work out why Bitcoin was important.  Since I have worked it out.  Have been excited ever since.

One off NP-Hard.

A friend of mine posted about it on Facebook. I don't think he uses it though, he just posted it so that people knew about an alternative currency.

I read about it on reddit mid-July, didn't take it seriously though until October when there was decent volume on the exchanges.

Can everyone please pop over there and upvote my comment that bitcoins are not "generated by computers"?

RE: not promoting too much: spot on. Aggressive promotion is important if you're hoping to get rich on the BTC you've interested in. I'm content to just wait for services to slowly pop up.
