I have an 8tb hard drive and a laptop I can dedicate to permenantlh mine for 6 months, is it worth doing it?

Or am I better off trying to sell my drive off for backups here so people each get a part and encrypt their data with their own private key to which stays with them.

I am intrigued by the software solution for the later. Time to learn something new for me.

You mean use HDD to mine Proof-of-Capacity such as burst coin? If so, then the answer is no. Mining calculator such as https://blocks.fastpool.info/calculator & http://burstcoincalculator.com/ show that you only get about $1-$2/month, without calculating electricity cost.

I don't know much about decentralized cloud storage, but https://storj.io/ homepage mention you will get $0.015/GB/month which mean you could earn up to $120/month.

storj.io requires bandwidth with proof of capacity doesn't.

Ideally, someone would create a public "proof-of-retrieval" system rather than just simply proof-of-capacity.

If someone were able to build proof-of-retrieval, ideally with proof-of-compute (assuming you had a fancy enigma of sorts), you could do distributed applications effectively.

Electricity costs are hdds are tiny. An hdd running takes around 5 watts of energy. That totals up to 3600 watt-hour per month. My rate is $0.10 per kilowatt-hour, so $0.36 in electricity cost per month off $1-2 profit still.

There is one youtube guy, which was doing HDD mining for like an year, and recently he has stoped doing that, so i think you should sell them.

There are many videos of youtubers testing hdd mining. Some went to extremes like building their own HDD racks and such. You can check one of such projects here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ4ea5NNqcg

In short, he made a 64 drive bay with 170 TB of storage and that managed to mine a bit over 100 USD per month, at 0.01 USD per BURST coin. Now the price is 0.008 USD.
HDD mining was worth it only if you had an access to a ton of scrap drives for free. Now I think it might not even be worth it with free drives.

As I read it, that is the final price, not the fee? Anyway, it is not yet working.

If you have 8 hard drives and a laptop. And in these drives, some of them are extra then.
*you should sell the drive that is not in your need to earn some money.
*You can also donate extra drive to some needy person whom you think is deserving of this.
*you can also gift your extra drive to your dear friend or relatives.
but if you do not like these options given above you can use some of them as USB wallets or as the backup of your hard drive data.
