For those having troubles with imperial units, 67,000 acres is roughly equal to 271 square kilometers. For comparison, the area of San Francisco is 121 square km (30,000 acres). So, it is an ambitious project, and we can only wish good luck to Jeffry Berns because surely he's trying to do a good thing but it may take a lot of efforts buidling a city like on the pic below amidst the desert.

The pic is taken from this tweet https://twitter.com/BlockchainsLLC/status/1058379836497059840
and there are more pics there.

He's a dreamer. A city of this size won't be built in his lifetime. This is too ambitious and he should start small and try to make it self sustainable as soon as possible, or it will end  up like so many abandoned projects and structures around the world, where the builders run out of money, or time.

An e-gaming arena?

Funny how people like this throw around their futuristic plans but rarely seem to consider the day to day stuff. Is there enough water for something like this?

Since he's throwing enough real money at it maybe something will spring up and I like his attitude to the whole thing. It's not as if he's going around trying to milk dentists for the money, or worse, an ICO. If he builds it I'll certainly enjoy a nose around.

The article says it's near Reno, which isn't the driest of desert areas -- 24 inches of snow and 10 inches of rain per year. How near is not clear, though. Supposedly this company has "preliminary county support" for a new town built along the Truckee River, which may offer some irrigation possibilities. Higher volume irrigation to desert areas isn't impossible either -- consider Las Vegas. But it's also a sensitive issue because of the prolonged drought in Nevada and California.

I've been thinking the whole day about this ambitious project and I couldn't dismiss the idea that it can be unbearably boring to live in such a place. You can spot the boredom even in this, idealistic from the first glance, computer-generated image:

I would understand the necessity of such a place if we were living in the Late Medieval Period. At the time the best minds needed to be in one place in orderr to cooperate on creating ideas, as it was with Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli and others during the Renaissance. But is it necessary for the best minds to live together in one place today, when we have the Internet?

Also, can it be even bad in a way, when people who practically rule the world live out of touch with reality? Shouldn't they encounter with other people, not only with people like them, in order to better understand the possible consequences of their creativity for the whole world?

It's interesting how humans have basically rejected 'new' cities and revere the chaotic and knackered old ones. That hasn't stopped all these numerous attempts to build a nirvana that no one wants. I expect somewhere like this would be entirely business led and if the businesses went then the people wouldn't bother sticking around.

He might be trying to create a Silicon Valley version for blockchain and I think this cryptocurrency focused area will be a good idea for start-up or experienced companies on working together. This is initially not a bad idea but I think my main concern is making this an attractive place to start a business with pushing this area to become an economical zone which if pushed through in congress will make their taxes and other cost cheaper which will persuade people on building up their business in this high-tech city he is dreaming of.

Well if everyone would have that kind of mentality how the hell would we make progress in the first place? We progress by trial and error, by continuing to dream. That's just how we are. It's in our nature. Just take a look at our history, look how far we've come. Sure his attempt may fail, and many others have already failed, but sometimes you must take a leap of fate to create something great. I believe he even said that in the article when I read it the other day.

Honestly, I'm kinda suspicious, I see a bunch of buzzwords like "blockchain" and "AI" all in one sentence and it makes me uneasy, because it sounds like just another ICO scam. I know that there's no ICO here and that the guy has invested his money, but maybe there's some hidden reason for all of this - maybe it's some sort of publicity stunt or a preparation for some scam.

This was a good article. I like reading these kinds of stories.

https://allthatsinteresting.com/7-creepy-abandoned-cities

Not related to bitcoin, but here in the Philippines they have plans to build a multi-billion dollar city all at once, called New Clark City. Construction here is notoriously slow and frequently mismanaged; I don't see it being completed for at least 20-30 years. What its supposed to look like:

Won't be the last urban heaven some wealthy guy tries to build. As pointed out by the Philippines example above, we in southeast Asia just can't seem to cease our fascination with these modern contraptions. Just take a look at the white elephants littering countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

Bitcoin is freedom and control with finances, but I guess it shouldn't surprise us when we get the Puertopias and now Nevadatopia... Gotta scratch that rich itch.

You are right, but on the other hand a bit of healthy criticism can help developing a great idea. I personally hope that Jeffrey Berns will read this thread and will consider what is said here. Maybe it's not too late to make some corrections to his plan and to create something which is really needed by today's world. As I said above, I personally doubt that there is a need in such a city, but I respect Jeffrey Berns very much for trying to do something good for the smart people and for the world in general, and I think this community can help him with some really good advices. It's not that I think that I can give a good advice, but I'm sure this community can, and that's why I think this thread deserves more attention.

I totally agree with you here. I think similar operations have failed because of not putting this into practice. Often times these projects are launched by a single person or a group of like minded people, while this might not seem a problem at first it can be detrimental going into the long run. You need critics and people who think outside the box to expose clear flaws that you might not have seen and improve from there. Therefore I feel like getting a dedicated community behind this project is very important.

I doubt he will see this thread though but I also saw that there was a reddit thread on this matter as well. Hopefully for the sake of the projects he sees this or realizes it himself. Either way i wish him the best of luck with this project.

well projects like these are hard to fulfil without mega investment of time and resources
you can't expect it to be done in one year , it is a slow process and the guy is definitely a dreamer
but without them dreamers our world would not be a better place to live in
chinese build ghost cities with no population with all the communications that are just stand there empty , so why is his project even with all the "blockchain"
and new tech and stuff buzz words in it has no right to exist? it is his money to burn , I doubt he has enough to complete such an ambitious thing,
but at the very least he will create work places , I see no harm in him trying to live a dream

Similar news from virtual world: Decentraland(MANA), the first virtual reality platform owned by its users, has hit a new record for a single LAND purchase. According to data first highlighted by DCLBlogger, a 126-parcel piece of LAND was just purchased for 2.7 million MANA ($215,000) by an unidentified individual or organization. The purchase was made via the project’s built-in marketplace that allows users to buy and sell parcels of LAND with MANA.

Berns, who focused primarily on class action against major financial services firms during his legal career, allegedly made a fortune by investing in Ethereum in 2015. Now he wants to give back to the crypto community and make his mark on the world.

The expanding complex should be a model for managing an intelligent city with a decentralized blockchain infrastructure that enhances all interactions. It will house a high-tech venture park combining blockchain technology with artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing and nanotechnology.
