Quote
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies say that a Newsweek reporter's story exposing what the magazine claims is the founder of Bitcoin did quote them and the man featured in the article accurately, a spokesman said.

The San Gabriel Valley suburb of Temple City  was inundated by reporters Thursday after Newsweek alleged resident Dorian Nakamoto was really "Satoshi Nakamoto," the man behind the virtual currency. In the Newsweek article he is quoted as telling the reporter "I'm no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it" while deputies are present.

I expect that he did say it (or something like it).

If you've been interviewed by the media you'd understand the game: they use the facts to paint the picture they want.  We discussed Dorian's quote here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=503956.0

You gotta me kidding me!

I still wonder if it was a miscommunication.  When she said Bitcoin he misheard her and thought she named a project he had worked on with the government.   In the AP interview he sometimes referred to Bitcoin as "BitCom".

It would suggest that the reporter was being truthful about the statement.

However, it is plausible that Dorian was confused between "classified government work" and bitcoin when answering the question.  I had read somewhere that he had suffered a stroke.

The guy is pretty confused... he referred to Bitcoin as a company in one of the interviews. I wouldn't take anything he says at face value. Let's not forget he also went through a stroke. I really feel sorry for the guy, he doesn't deserve having all these media types prey on him :\

They only confirmed Dorian's quote was accurate.  They said nothing about what question he was answering.  And from what the article say neither apparently were they asked.  If you really wanted to nail this down wouldn't you ask them to repeat the answer AND the question they heard?

The story says the cops arrived to see the woman on the premises:

When deputies arrived, Parker said "the woman identified herself as Newsweek reporter Leah Goodman and the resident expressed reluctance to talk to her."

In Kashmir Hill's Forbes followup  (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2014/03/07/more-details-on-newsweek-journalists-interview-with-alleged-bitcoin-creator/) the reporter says:

"When she returned after getting lunch, Nakamoto was standing in his driveway with two sheriff’s deputies."

Both stories can't be true.

it sounded like dorian does not dispute the quote either... just what he meant by it.  this just seems like media doing clickbait , it doesnt change the story at all. just confirms that everyone agrees he said what he said,  but he disagree what he meant by saying.

Let me get this straight. One seasoned reporter and two police officers with radios, but nary a sound bite.

You gotta me kidding me!

I still wonder if it was a miscommunication.  When she said Bitcoin he misheard her and thought she named a project he had worked on with the government.   In the AP interview he sometimes referred to Bitcoin as "BitCom".

He is under a huge amount of pressure now, but when Leah was first there it wasn't so intense. Perhaps he thought that if he told her that he had nothing to do with it anymore she would leave him alone and interview someone else. She had probably tried to charm him with her smile and by being friendly. Remember that she started her communications by tricking him saying that she enjoying the shared interest of model trains!  Angry Perhaps he didn't yet realise how serious it was and he preferred not to lie outright to her?  Angry

Maybe with his statements now he is just trying throw out misdirection by referring to Bitcoin as "Bitcom" and saying silly things like: "I never communicated with Bitcoin" to throw people off as much as possible. It's pretty smart actually since it seems to be working for a lot of people. Smiley

now this funny man will be stalked by the cia and fbi, how sad

Yes. He knows that with all the controversy surrounding Bitcoin he will be subpoenaed by all sorts of government agencies that he really doesn't want to have any contact with at all!

It's really sad to see this great man who wants nothing but to live a private life being harassed in this way.

Shame on the sleazy Leah McGrath Goodman, she is the worst scum of a reporter!  Angry

Well actually he called the cops because a strange woman was at his door and wouldn't leave.  He only opened the door once the deputies arrived on the scene.  Doesn't sound like a friendly flirt and chat.

Exactamundo.
He didn't even have any idea what she was talking about.
His denial was the kind of thing somebody would say without a thought.
He was trying to get her to leave him alone.

She called him before she was coming though.

Also, remember that she had been communicating with him for two weeks prior to meeting him, making up stories about how she was interested in learning "how to upgrade model steam trains using computer-aided design technologies", one of his favourite interests.

So she was clearly not a stranger to him when she turned up at his house.

She probably used every trick in the book to get him to talk about Bitcoin, from flirting, charming to getting him to pity her. I can imagine the conversation now:

Quote
"Come on Dorian please, my boss will kill me if I don't get a quote from you about Bitcoin, [sad eyes, and then a charming smile]

Then Dorian/Satoshi loses his focus for a second and let's out:
Quote
"I am not involved with that anymore and I can't discuss it.. Other people have taken over and I have no more involvement. Please just leave me alone Leah.

This is what these scummy reporters without any scruples do. Infiltrate and pretend to be friends with good decent people so that they drop their guard, and then they hang them out!  Angry

Yeah he called the cops on her, kept the door shut, and refused to come out and talk to her.  He waited for the cops to arrive  and then she decided to flit with him in front of the cops.   Maybe you just need to get laid because that is the most implausible scenario ever.  You sure you aren't confusing this with the start of some porn?

Yeah he called the cops on her, kept the door shut, and refused to come out and talk to her.

Yes, because he didn't want to talk to her about Bitcoin.

My point was that she was no "strange woman suddenly showing up at his door".

He had been communicating with her for two weeks about his favourite hobby, (model trains), and she had called him in advance to tell him she was coming to see him.

Quote

I never said that she flirted with him, you did.

Edit: I re-read my previous post and realised that I actually suggested she might have flirted with him. Was probably too tired when writing all this. Maybe flirting is unlikely, but my point was that she deceived him to get him slip up, and she did whatever she had to, in order to achieve a quote.

I said that she probably used every trick in the book that she could think of, including trying to be charming and friendly, because that is what scummy reporters like her do! They lie and say and do anything to get their story, and perhaps after having built up some rapport with him during the past two weeks she managed to get that quote during a moment of weakness when he wanted nothing more than for this woman to disappear.

I also don't put it beyond her to lie and completely fabricate the quote, but two police offers have now also confirmed it, and my gut feeling tells me that this is our Satoshi.

Yeah, I certainly could do with a good lay!  Grin
