Hello everyone,

I'll be waiting for answers to my question. So here's my question and this question is all about sending merit but I don't know if this is allowed or not.

When someone send you a merit and you have a 1 sendable merit now, Is it not allowed to send 1 merit back to the sender as a thank you when the sender send you 1 merit?

As far as i know you are free to do with your sMerits what you want.
Personally i like the idea to reward other quality posts on the forum with merit(s) to stimulate others to keep making quality posts.

Well, merit was introduced to reward quality posts, it might not be allowed to send it bakc and forth. Sending merits to each other can be really dangerous too, you could easily get tagged as a merit abuser by higher rank members.

Well, the merit won't be sent to any thread but to the useful thread that the sender made so it's not put into waste but to also reward the sender. Since it's up to you to send merit or not but I think it must be sent to a useful thread and as I said not in random post or reply that the sender made.

I guess you don't understand what the OP meant. As far as I know, You are not free to abuse your sMerit(s), doing so could lead to being tagged by a DT.

Is it not allowed to send 1 merit back to the sender as a thank you when the sender send you 1 merit?
In my candid opinion it makes no sense doing so, even if it is not considered as an abuse. The merit was meant as a "Thanks for your help (quality post, or some helpful post), Why would you thank someone for saying "thank you"? Rather use the sMerits on some quality posts you find too and If you really wish to give it back to the same user, perhaps later on you can If the user makes a post you find merit worthy.

When I think of merit being used as a thank you, I think more along the line of you had a problem and then someone helped you with a solution. Leaving their post a merit would be a nice thank you. Just leaving merit because someone left it for you is actually bad, because it could lead to users thinking they are involved in merit circles to inflate each other’s scores.

One is allowed to send sMerit as one wishes, according to his personal criterial. Nevertheless, the general spirit that serves as a guideline is to awarding when you come across a post that is noticeable in some way be it due to the interest or depth of its content, the questions it rises or answers provided, the wit behind, and whatnot.
Sending a merit as a thankyou is a kind of  "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" which does not really fall into the above described general spirit. While not prohibited, if there is no real content substance behind, it could be seen as merit swap regardless of the intent. That sometimes leads to getting red tagged for being interpreted as merit abuse.

On occasions, a couple of people may merit each other when debating, since the context of the posts will likely show that there is no merit abuse there, but a contributive dialogue between forum members who find each other’s posts merit worthy due to the content and effort made to create them.

Merit was introduced to improve the quality of the discussions in the Bitcoin Talk forum. Sending merit to somebody because they have sent you merit is against the spirit of the system. It has dangers as well. It may cause the two accounts to be considered as alts, and it may caause either or both of you to receive a red trust comment. I'm sure you don't want to reward someone who has the goodness to reward you with a merit with a negtive trust comment.

You shouldn't do that. If you got Merited, you shouldn't send Merit back to this user. Users who are giving Merit aren't expecting to get Merit in return.
But I think it wouldn't be something wrong if you you would Merit quality post of user who had Merited you in past.

You didn't receive 1 spendable merit for 1 merit. Because you have to receive 2 merits to get 1 spendable merit. You have to give merit for valuable posts in this forums. That's why bitcointalk forum added merit system. The number of merits is giving high-quality value to your bitcointalk profile. My personal opinion is please spend your merit for valuable posts on here.

First, I won't send merit to any random post. Second, receiving 1 merit and got 1 smerit means I have 0.5 smerit already. Third, I sent merit to a post that I think it's worthy to receive merit from me.

Although you are free to do with your merits what you want sending a merit to someone who sent you a merit can be considered as merit abuse and as users before me stated you could get tagged for doing that.
But, if the user who sent you merits has quality posts that you would award in case you have Smerits to send I dont think that would be a problem. Only in case the post deserves to be awarded with merits. If you award a post that has absolutely no quality at all most people would see that as simple abuse of the system.

But if you ask me I wouldn't do that if i were you. That is very close to be considered merit trading or merit abusing and could get you into trouble.

As a starter or a user with few merits, it's very possible that a few or all the names of people who've merited you will stick out wherever you come across them. And if they make quality content which you deem memorable, by all means do.

But meriting someone solely on the reason that they merited you is unethical and not really necessary.

Some say its a 'thankless job' most times, searching for and meriting deserving post, but it's always appreciated, especially by those with lesser merit count. And it is assumed that you appreciate it, if you must show it, you can drop them a pm expressing your gratitude.

It is wrong to have the feeling that you can do whatsoever you wish with your Smerits,if it did work that way, we'll be having blatant abuse of the system thats meant to serve as a commendation for quality posts/reply..

Your allowed to merit posts that are quality and not necessarily posts you agree with
So if a user drops you a merit for some reason,i see no reason for thanking him/her for it, he/she appreciates what you could come up with
And even if you must merit such user, you'll have to go to his/her post history to find a post of quality, and droping a merit to it is definitely acceptable..

I do agree with you... Been reading about the merit system since i joined, and it's only fair that merits should be for posts that goes to help people instead of making it a return of favour.

That will bastardise the essence of merit allocation. Merit are given as a sign of a well constructed work. Merit is earned not gifted or given as a sign of thank you. If you really want to thank the person you can check on the person and merit a contribution made my the person that is worthy of merit

Merit is not moderated, but merit should not be used as a thank you unless you are giving merit to someone that has helped you with their knowledge or abilities.

It will definitely improper for one to send merit to another just a sign of gratitude it will really bring the essence of merit idea to the mud. You got merited for making a good lost you really don't have to reciprocate the gesture
