Hi guys,

Just thinking of mining. No idea where to start.

I thought I would ask here what are good coins to start mining? What software to use? Where to buy a rig / build my own? etc. etc.

Thanks for any response.

Ash.

basic for newbs is to check online mining calculators for a good coin to mine for a preferred mining gear

https://whattomine.com

If you want GPU's just select the type of GPU you want to use, there are also ASICs included in the tab

then check power consumptions and compute for Electricity cost rate in your area

decide if its worth it.

Getting into mining is not the best time right now...
You need to do your own research a little bit more ...
Do you want to mine with asic , gpu, fpga ??
How much you paying for electricity ? $/kwh including all taxes ? Thats the most important Wink
Your winter electricity rate is the same as your summer rate ?
Generated heat can be a issue for you ?
Loud miners can be a issue for you ?
Do You want to use a separate room , shed , building for mining ?
Do you have enough power ( ampere ) available for your future mining rigs ?
Do you have any basic knowledge about computers, networking ?

There is a few very important things for you to consider :

For a beginner, I think you should check coins that can be mined with only CPU. Like Nevra, Veco...

Try it for a while and keep reading and searching about mining, then you can decide what to do.

The good coins to mine, are the ones you chose to mine after doing your own research. There are plenty of topics here discussing coins and the opinions differ. Also, that is a hard time for mining, therefore you need to research the algorithms, rigs (build your own or buy plug’n’mine), electricity costs in your country, and based on that make up your mind. Don’t start mining before you do a proper calculation. Good luck

One thing to note is that whattomine uses modifications to GPUs in their calculator, such as undervolting and a mild memory overclock- hovering over the GPU name shows the mods done to the card, and most of these overclocks and undervolts are reachable for basically all cards of that model number. If you don’t know how to change card clocks and voltages, download MSI Afterburner if you’re on Windows and change numbers from there. There’s plenty of guides here to help you out. All you need to do is find them and read through them- everyone here started with reading existing information to learn how to mine.

I am mining Raven and Suqa coins right now. Seems they are more profitable than ETH and Monero.

I would advise mining a promising coin that you can mine a lot of rather than going with one of the profitable coins shown by the calculator sites. Even the most profitable coins of today are a joke if you are looking to pay off any equipment wit today's profit levels, and earning maybe .01 ETH a week with a single rig would not allow you to accumulate enough coins even if the prices do return.

Instead research some of the up and coming coins, or at least look for older ones that are undervalued and not being heavily mined by others, and just hope you pick a winner that will perform well in a few years. One strategy is too compile a list of several such candidate coins and maybe point your miner at each of them for a 30 day period and accumulate a small stack of several different coins to help maximize your chances that one will succeed down the road.

There are some major coins to mine with graphic cards like Monero V8 , Ethereum and X16R , these  coins offer a bit of profit if mined with an electricity cost of 0.06 dollar/kilowatt and you have to add the initial rig investment which is cheaper nowadays with 1000 dollars you can build a 6 cards rig.

I would advise to join mining now only if you believe in the long run otherwise if you just want quick bucks mining is not for you.
