The much-hyped initial coin offering for decentralized storage project Filecoin concluded on Thursday. Despite being open only to accredited investors, the Filecoin ICO raised $257 million, shattering the previous record for a token crowdsale.

Simply put, Filecoin plans to leverage unused data center and hard drive storage space to build a decentralized storage network. In exchange for contributing extra storage space to the network, users will receive Filecoin tokens which can then be exchanged for other currencies. Conversely, those in need of storage can purchase tokens and exchange them for storage space. Purportedly, this will drastically lower the cost of cloud storage.

Yesterday, the inaugural Initial Coin Offering (ICO) hosted on CoinList, Filecoin, closed at over $200 million raised. Crowdfund Insider reported at the end of August that two Form D’s were filed with the SEC indicating Filecoin probably closed at around $210 million. While the ICO was not without a few glitches and bumps along the tokenized path, the offer marks an interesting chapter in the world of crypto-based securities. Filecoin reported that investors from more than 50 countries participated in the offer. The “Advisor Sale” raised about $52 million before the public launch. The Filecoin (FIL) token is the native crypto token of the Filecoin network, similar to Bitcoin. Filecoin will be used to pay for storage, retrieval, and transactions in the distributed data storage network envisioned by the creators. It will also be easily transferable to other currencies on various exchanges.

I just had a read about Filecoin a while ago. Why is the coin is not tradeable? Is there any locking periods for this coin that's why it's not that usable as of now?

Did you join the initial miners? If so, you will receive a notification for this to happen! FIL is one of the most anticipated coins in the year 2018, the price of $100 will be the minimum in 6 months! It has been developed for years.

is this a real coin?  Grin  ~thanks!

Even i, find it hard to have answers to your question. There are only less information available. Because mostly, their investors are private so it didn't actually make it public. Just like what Cardano did when they conduct their ICO.
