Reality 101:
Private property can set their own standards.

Reality 2010:
This forum used to be a paradise of people who were interested in BTC when it was 100% worthless  // before Pizza day and Alpaca Socks

Reality 2019:
What is the actual question when paradise is destroyed and can never return?

The current "merit system" makes an interesting statement about Human Freedom?
Noobs are trapped in a semi-permanent underclass, and "Legends" have to deal with this BS (for example)

Quote
Yeah the game is funny if you kindly give me a merit  ...and we are go on

Is there something here worthy of discussion?

The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. It is the first distributed timestamping system.

To play devil's advocate, most things about bitcoin have already been discussed to death.

Development is proceeding a lot more slowly than it used to.

Most people interested in what Bitcoin is have heard about it already.  :/

Noobs are trapped in a semi-permanent underclass
I'm having a hard time figuring out what this thread is about, exactly, but I did want to at least comment on the above.  It's only the illiterate, spamming, alt-account farming, and trust/merit abusing noobs who are going to be stuck at the lower ranks.  That's exactly how the system is supposed to work.  There are newbies who've ranked up since the merit system got started in January, and they deserved to.  The shitposters who are only motivated to post incoherent garbage are the ones who will never achieve even Member level unless they resort to buying merits.

This forum used to be a paradise of people who were interested in BTC when it was 100% worthless  // before Pizza day and Alpaca Socks
Can't argue with this since I wasn't around when bitcointalk was created, but even if it wasn't a "paradise", I've read enough posts from the early days to know that discussion was much more focused, more passionate, and wasn't motivated by the need to increase post counts for a fatter signature spampaign paycheck.

Yep, it was much different back then from what I've seen, but those days are long gone.  Hell, they were already gone when I registered in 2015.  Signature campaigns are a very clever way to advertise things, but their effects are extremely toxic.  I think of sig campaigns as more of a social/psychological experiment than the merit system.

I'm not sure if there were section such as Econimics, P&S, and Off-topic back in 2010, but the spam was already discussed since 2011. And I'm not entirely sure how many topics were made asking who Satoshi Nakamoto is or this endless topic about their crystal ball seeing the future.

If only all of the people in this forum think like Antonopoulos, the forum will be a paradise for the crypto-geeks, but sadly, we're not. Surely, there will be an eyesore, but I find it entertaining, and it's located in "other" board. Imagine someone posting the latest news in P&S section, those mind-boggling discussion in SD section, and don't forget the famous thread in off-topic section, without them, the forum will be purely about cryptography, and the level of my brain won't be able to handle it if ever we're all talking about hashes and algos all the time.

Although the answer can't be seen on this forum to my long time question back when I was younger, this forum became an eye opener, and I can now answer it if some kid would ask me the same question.

It's too early, better wait after the halvening.

Hope that those badges would be a game changer.

If you are planning on leaving, better see this - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5066769.0, see if you can join their discussion.

Normally, if given a choice to do something and nothing, I choose to do nothing.
But I will do something if it helps someone else to do nothing.
I'd work all night if it meant nothing got done.

sometimes I feel sad too, so much to get merit, what standards should be achieved, because we know the order, namely newbie, jr.member, member, fullmember, senior member and hero / legendary. Should a newbie stand by the hero to get one merit which will later make the rank change to jr.member or there are other criteria? until now it was difficult to get merit.

Well, expert forum knowledge and ability to create great, easy to read statistics, such as merit statistics has been recorded to rank up a lot of users very fast.

And you don't really have to start topics, you could be there to help others out. Providing tips and guidelines.
And only make a post when it would be absolutely relevant.

I don't agree with that. I agree that the technical aspects may be more about helping people than about new developments. Bitcoin and the cryptos that it spawned are on the edge of a really exciting phase at the moment. Bitcoin is becoming a store of wealth, and it is having to resist a takeover by the banking elite. Some of the alts are becoming the possible payment systems of the future.

I'd like to see more discussions about these topics, especially if the forum can attract some of the bankers, developers and merchants that will be the industry movers in the future. In order for this to happen, Bitcoin Talk needs to get rid of the low end scammers, and rebuild it's reputation as the top end crypto forum.

It's would be unjust to give up on the community because of those bastardizing the forum. In every 10 there is still that member that is here to interact educationally. Would it be fair to throw in the towel because of some no do good individuals then you will not be doing good yourself.
I am guessing from a post I saw,  the forum has lost some meaningful Members do to this fact it can't afford to keep losing more. If necessary let more measures be implemented just let the balance of the forum be maintained

Anyone remember the "Newbie Jail" ~2011 during the first huge troll invasion? If if failed "why", and if it was useful how come it doesn't still exist?

...and rebuild it's reputation as the top end crypto forum.
Is there any real competition, at this time?

Do not worry about the members making low quality threads here. You should just enjoy the informative and detailed posts being made by members who understand the value of this community. And believe me there are a handful of such members producing enough content for a person to consume regularly.

Definitely there's still a lot of threads worth discussing on the forum at the moment, probably you may not be able to compare it to back then, but it's not like the forum has lost all its quality members/posters..
There are more than enough threads for one to read and learn on the forum I think
