Hi! So I'm new to this forum and new to the world of bitcoin and cryptocurrency. I guess I should post at Beginners board but this kinda have something to do with the forum so I hope I'm in the right place. The truth is I don't know anything much about bitcoin yet. I've heard about it from a few friends who kept talking about it whenever we meet and I felt out of place, so I checked it out, read some things, and decided to ultimately join. I know they are here, I'm just not sure yet what handle they use. Anyway, I posted in this board because I have some questions that hopefully someone can help me out. I've read the "Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ" but honestly I still have some questions. One thing I realized is that bitcoin and cryptocurrency are very difficult to understand, so my question is: are merits and trust important? what exactly are they and how do you gain it? Does it have anything to do with bitcoin directly?

I would also appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction about learning about bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Preferably something that is easy to understand. I know I can easily search for it but the truth is it is overwhelming and I don't know where and how to start. Hopefully someone will help me. Thanks guys!

Merit is something given to members of bitcointalk for being helpful. Trust points? Pretty much like feedback points like you see on sites like eBay. It has nothing to do with bitcoin itself whatsoever. So yes, you can freely buy bitcoin and freely use the forum and converse with people without merit.
More information on merits: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0

I always suggest reading this compilation of guides to total beginners. It should keep you busy for a while: https://coindesk.com/information

No, don't worry about it, and no.

And you're still on the wrong board.

And you're lying that you read the rules because there are links and everything else you need on that page.

All you need to know is answered here: FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit

Does it have anything to do with bitcoin directly?

No, they are only relevant for bitcointalk, the forum, not the cryptocurrency bitcoin.

To come up with the preceding sermon, and then end up with this is rather funny and heartbreaking  Grin

Merits and trust are actually the most easy rules to understand on the forum rules,as there happen to be no complexities, and if there was,it definitely was broken down so even a lay man would understand..

If you didn't get what you needed to understand in there, then sadly no one else can explain it better to you

Hi. Sorry I wasn't being clear. I read it, but there are some parts of it that is unclear. Like those two, and a lot about bitcoin and cryptocurrency. I focused on it because this board says Meta and is about the forum.

Reading your post you mistaking bitcointalk forum for another thing entirely. Bitcointalk forum is a community where we come to discuss everything bitcoin and cryptocurrency related. And both the merit and trust issues you pin pointed are purely the forum related it has nothing to do with bitcoin itself. As a newbie that you are if merit and trust are the two thing you first want to understand about bitcoin then you need to do an attitude adjustment. It's best you read more about bitcoin

If you have friend talking about it, why not ask them to teach you instead? Is it because you want to surprise them someday that you have knowledge with Bitcoin? If that is why I don't think it is that so important just so you can relate to them. If you really want to learn you should ask for your friends as it will be much better than someone teaching you cryptocurrencies online, and I think they will be more than happy to do so.

Welcome to bitcointalk. Where people know more about trust and merit than they actually do about bitcoin.

Ask your "friends" if you need help.
