Hello,

I'm doing an academic project where I need some network traffic produced by bitcoin miners. I tried to mine bitcoin myself with a GPU for some hours, but I only got rejected shares because of low difficulty. Even though this somewat helps with the project, it would be way better to have some actual traffic with accepted shares and stuff.
I was wondering if I should just keep trying waiting for a share or two to be accepted (or maybe I got the cgminer configuration wrong?), or if I shoud buy a cheap asic usb, and try to mine with that. Any recomendations with what would be the best solution?.

Thanks!

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

I think Bitcoin pools no longer accepts GPU mining so this is the reason why you can't mine bitcoin with GPU.

If you are willing to start mining with ASIC you can find the list of ASIC miner from here https://asicminervalue.com including the daily profitability.

USB Dongle or Antminer u1/u2/u3 is no longer support in some pools due to low hashrate but if only for your academic project you can try the antminer T9 it is cheaper around $150.

Check this T9 from here https://shop.bitmain.com/product/detail?pid=00020181023190821920tviTz8HX06EA

Thanks!

I don't really care about profitability right now, but only about the traffic that is created. Do you thing I will get any accepted shares with this Antminer T9? If not, is there any other cheap miner I could use?

Yes any SHA265 miner will work. You could use a Antminer S9, S9i or T9. You should be able to buy these on Amazon, ebay or Bitmain's site (the one that manufactures these ASIC miners).  Remember to buy a compatible PSU or you would not be able to run them.

I am however not sure if you would be able to capture any meaningful data unless you are only looking for how much data is transferred over x amount of time or how much bandwidth is being consumed.

May be if you provide details of what exact data you are trying to collect, people in this forum would be able to help.

I will use netflow, so I'm looking for bitrate, length of packets and conections mostly. I won't be using deep packet inspection right now.

Would it also be possible to just rent a mining rig?
I'm not talking about cloud mining btw, I mean renting an actual rig from someone.

You can check on https://www.miningrigrentals.com/

Then you wouldn't have to deal with the logistics of buying hardware and setting it up yourself.

Maybe ask in the mining section if someone is willing to capture a sample of their network traffic for you:

Or see if OgNasty can help you with a sample:
