2016 wallet.dat recovered but not show balance

hi, I in july of 2016 lost one wallet of bitcoin, I check and may rescue my wallet of 19 july of 2016 date

I open with bitcoin core 0.17.0.1 and its get fews alerts but open normally

in wallet opened this not show any transaction history, balance or list my address of my wallet

my wallet in 2016 have one password(I know the password) but the bitcoin core not ask the password and appears the wallet have no password when I opened in bitcoin core

I check in source code of my wallet in notepad and the datas are encrypted, is not legible characters, he are unknows characters how is encrypted

I use listaddressgroupings and not show anyone address of my wallet

may anyone help me to may show the my address of this wallet, thank you.

1) is the wallet finished syncing?
2) core does not ask for a password, even when the wallet itself is locked. You can run core with a locked wallet and generate new addresses. It's only when you want to spend funds you'll have to unlock your wallet (there are some other functions you can't use unless you unlock your wallet, but a lot of functionality is available without unlocking)

If it's a non-HD wallet (this might be the case for a ~2016 wallet), the wallet should contain pregenerated private keys. If , you use the gui, you should be able to create a new deposit address, this address should have been the same address as was generated in the past. You can check this address on a block explorer and see if it was funded.

I'd advise you to backup the encrypted wallet.dat, then let bitcoin core sync completely and see if transactions start to show up in your transaction history... If they do, you should be able to unlock your wallet using your password and spend these funds...

you should wait at least untill the blocks of 2016 were downloaded and parsed. If you don't see incoming transactions by the time you see your wallet caught up all the blocks of 2016, something else might be wrong...
But, if you had funds in your wallet in 2016, the odds are good that they'll show up as soon as the blocks funding your addresses are downloaded

if it doesn't show by listaddressgroupings, try listreceivedbyaddress or dumpwallet command
since you have password on it, you need to run walletpassphrase command before dumping
btw, you can use public web explorer to check their balances while waiting your core to sync up

if it says it's unencrypted then it's unencrypted. what are you trying to do? if you want to move your funds to a different address use the send tab.

Since it is completely synced now, do you see a balance and transaction history ?

If not, your wallet does not contain any BTC.
Quite a few people believe they had a BTC wallet while it actually was some other forked coin (e.g. litecoin).
If you don'T see any BTC, you might want to try importing it into a litecoin wallet.

Even if your wallet is encrypted, you don't need to decrypt it in order to see your addresses/balance.
Only sensitive information (e.g. password change, sending coins) do require to unlock your wallet using the password.


According to the error message, your wallet is not encrypted. This means you can do whatever you want with your wallet without the need of a password.

How exactly did you "rescue" this wallet? Did you use file recovery software or did you simply find an old copy of the wallet.dat on an old HDD/USB drive?

If you used recovery software to "undelete" a file... It's possible it has been corrupted and would explain the password/no password errors...

As abdussamad has already noted, if it says the wallet file is unencrypted, then it is unencrypted and has no password.

If you are 100% sure that your old wallet had a password, then either this recovered file is NOT the original wallet you were using... Or it was corrupted and unable to be properly recovered by your recovery software.

As above, it either isn't the original file... Or it is corrupted.


One last thought... Are you sure that Bitcoin Core is actually loading the recovered wallet file? It's possible that Bitcoin Core isn't even loading your recovered file but is using a newly generated wallet file...

How are you loading the recovered file into Bitcoin Core? Did you just rename it "wallet.dat" and put it in the Bitcoin Core datadir? Or does it have a different name?
