Watching DVDs on a tablet.

I want to try and legally copy a dvd onto my ipad in the UK. I can access pirate websites to watch the tv prorammes I want to watch  (with the DVD in my room just in case my wifi is monitored as it's technically public), but I'm wondering if there's a way to keep my dvd like quality for watching stuff?

You would need to copy your DVD to iTunes and then sync your itunes with your iPad. If it is your DVD and your ipad, you are allowed to make a copy of it but if you want to send the copy to someone else according to copyright laws that isn't legal.
Someone suggested using https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php if you are using a MAC.

Oh my GOD! do not be so stingy xd. Just pay for the DVDs or BlueRays! haha I recommend You  try some VPN or VPS like tunnel bear or expressvpn or something

From what I know, DVD Rip of your own DVD for your own use is legal in most countries. And there are plenty of programs that allows you do this conversion. The only problem is that for this you need a computer, whether it's a Mac or PC and whether you have MacOS, Windows or Linux.

So if you have any of those, please tell which and people will be able to help you.
And since somebody advertised Handbrake, I also agree it's a pretty good and easy to use (and free) program for this task, I used it on Windows.

I have handbrake already and use makemkv also to store a backup of dvds on my laptop.

Super. With Handbrake the DVD should be visible in the sources list. Or you can transcode the mkv you did already backup.
My guess would be that for your device you need one of the Apple presets, probably Apple 1080p30 Surround. For my tablets, since mine are older and their processor is weak, I also check Fast Decode.

I marked the settings in red. Give it a try and if needed adjust from there.

If the DVD is not protected you don't need all those steps (you don't need libdvdcss), but for the first time user they do explain better what to click.

You'll obtain an mp4 or m4v (you can force the extension in settings if you want to, I always keep mp4) and you'll have to transfer to your table with ITunes or similar (on my old ipad mini I have ITransfer which can retrieve files from my network/NAS and it's the only mean of transfer I've ever used with apple).
