There has been numerous complaints by members on the forum about quality posts not getting enough merits.
We have 119 merit sources and members in the forum who are active in giving out merits, and the system is all inclusive, but due to preference for specific boards or oversight and the fact that quality is objective, some merit deserving posts might not get rewarded.

But merits is not the only motivation to make relevant posts, having a quality post history is also very important as a member on this forum. Do not simply make one or two good posts solely for the purpose of getting merits and then get frustrated at the system when your post does not get the attention it deserves.

Having a good post history;
Puts you in a good position when a member views your post and goes through your post history to check if you're a regular contributor, or a spammer.

Also a post can be merited at any time, so there's no such thing as an 'unmerited post', It just hasn't yet been seen by a user who values the post.

Also some members go as far as to merit old posts of a member when going through his/her post history.

And very importantly, posting quality regularly impacts on you as a user and improves your knowledge of matters of cryptocurrency and the forum.

Activity limits you to only 14 a fortnight, so users do not have any pressure to post excessively to rank up, only contribute when you have something relevant to add to the discussion.

I'm starting to look at index pages 3 and 4 of boards such as this one. I find that the spambies are bumping the low value threads and keeping them on the first page, and others are getting locked. It's far easier to trawl those sanitised inex pages to find meritable posts. You can also find the better posters who aren't bumping for bounty or maffling for merits.

If I see a load of spam one liners when I look at a member's post history, then I am unlikely to spend any time looking for quality posts.

What you state is all quite true. I’d like to emphasize on the fact that very often, a good posting history is important as part of the credentials that one presents, since it speaks as to what kind of poster the person is. Posting history may be contrasted to determine if a given post is a one-off attempt, or part of a regular line of posting.

One-off attempts at a decent post may also be merited by some, but In my particular case, I prefer to contrast with history, at least until the poster pick’s up some traction on the forum.

Some of the Merit source believe in meriting the good content irrespective of post history but some believe in checking it .
But I personally know that post history is checked because couple of time I received merit from same user within a gap of few minutes in two different board. It is very unlikely that user automatically stumbled in my other post that is in another board and not at all trending topic.
In one case I observed  that  user given me merit in some other post  within the gap of few minutes where he quoted/replied to me in some other post.
Both type of cases clearly indicate post history was checked.

I will like to quote  my old post to emphasize how post history matters.

7. Put some little more effort in posting.
A little extra effort will pay you in long run and I will explain this mathematically.
.01 is only 1% of 1.  If you see at a glance you will not say that .99 and 1.01 is a huge difference.

But a huge difference occurs when they are multiplied repeatedly.
(.99)100 = .3660
(1.01)100 = 2.704
(1)100  =1

1 % laziness repeated in 100 post reduce your chances of getting merit from 1 to .366 but in other hand 1% of extra effort repeated 100 times will increase your chances from 1 to 2.704.

This is important, because Merit giver/ source do look in the history of poster. You might not get Merit for your all posts but if some Merit source/giver decide to give you Merit than he/she might double up seeing your history. In other hand if your continuously making bad post then Merit source/giver can change its mind by seeing other bad posts.

Good explanation and nice way of pointing out some quality suggestions. Making good posts should be in the interest of all members here. It is a sign of respect towards the OP who dedicated his time in creating his thread.

This suggestion can not be over emphasized, I regularly go through my posts history, looking for improvements on my posting, language and quality in the content.
It's always very satisfying to know that your post has been helpful to someone, regardless whether that user has smerits to hand out or not.

If every user was conscious of what they put out regardless that we have no link between out personal profiles and forum profiles this forum would be that much better.

And very importantly, posting quality regularly impacts on you as a user and improves your knowledge of matters of cryptocurrency and the forum.

Problem is most people complaining about merits are people that want to quickly earn money from signature campaigns.
This is real problem, because if you are here to learn or just talk/share opinions you don't care about merits, merits come naturally and naturally your post quality average is big.

Also a post can be merited at any time, so there's no such thing as an 'unmerited post', It just hasn't yet been seen by a user who values the post
This is one very important part that should be highlighted, its only a merit seeker who get dismayed when their post do not get merited as at when they feel it should,or when they are hungry for it.
Posts aren't created for the sole purpose of earning merits but to Forster discussions between members on the forum, who all pour out their different opinions on the issue raised..

Thus in the process, whoever is loaded with Smerits and wishes to merit the post, would do so,and this surely can happen anytime,be it days, weeks, months or years after the post was made..

Satoshi and most of the inactive members at the moment were all inactive before the merit system was introduced, but users all went back, dug out such posts and rained merits on them, which shows quality always stands out and gets due rewards

I merited and bumped a thread from page 13 on the beginners board. I don't usually bump them, but I thought that the thread had some interesting replies.

From my own experience I can say that I received almost all my Merits on fresh posts. Only few of my posts were Merited after few weeks or month. But you're right that's important to have many quality posts in your posting history. And Merit isn't main reason. Quality posts shows that you're smart user who didn't came here to shitpost for bounties. What kind of old posts have biggest chance to be Merited? Helpful guides which continously get new replies, historic posts.
But if you made lot of quality posts, you shouldn't expect that all of them will be merited - there are simply too many users and not that much merit in circulation.

I came across a statistic from user DdmrDdmr about merit giving timeline (can't find it now) and it seems that merits gets handed down to a post some weeks after it's been posted, although this is usually not the first merit the post gets

Also posts are very prominent, but replies in posts aren't and a reply to a post with multiple replies will likely not be seen immediately and could be meeited later on when someone takes time to read the whole thread.

But if you made lot of quality posts, you shouldn't expect that all of them will be merited - there are simply too many users and not that much merit in circulation.

Very likely, but quality users stand a good chance of getting merits on posts made with lots of careful thinking, but you can hardly expect every reply of yours to get merits as the system needs to include all members making efforts towards improving the forum.

I have once had a member who I believe to be a merit source go through my post history and give me about 8 merits spread out over 3 to 4 posts, some of which had not been merited before then.
So yes a quality post history is very important and it can get merited at any time, so do not constantly reload the page, just be sure that members who view it would have found it helpful.

I guess you’re talking about this posts: Forum Merited Messages- Does size count?. The post is from the end of May 2018, so things may have shifted since then, but it is still worth taking a glimpse at.
Specifically, section six within the references posts (“time between publishing and meriting”) indicates that 13,73% of merited posts are merited within the first hour, an additional 10,05% on the second hour and 56,50% within the first day. 76,97% are merited within the first week.

A lot goes on behind the scenes, and I would say that backtracked merited post that are over a week old are often good reference posts, although some shady stuff goes on sometimes trying to camouflage merit abuse on older posts to try to disguise the fact.

The above is an overall aggregate view, and it would be very interesting to see it by board. That is a lot of work though and at the time I cannot get into that currently.

It definitely is crucial to have a good and spam-free post history in order to stand out among all the users around you. A user might post a few decent posts over a week, but he might not be a regular good poster and that is what the history shows. Though a lot of users don't bother to open the history of every user who had posted something good in order to merit it, but some out there do prefer this method, and that is where a good posting habit comes to work.

Edit: I just gave you a merit, after checking your post history.  Wink Grin
