'The new Marulas Public Market in Valenzuela City is the first-of-its-kind ‘DigiPalengke’ initiative in Northern Metro Manila where an entire marketplace is equipped to accept mobile cashless payments.'

This is quite interesting since even a public market where most of the time common folk buy their everyday needs is accepting digital payments. While this is not entirely related to cryptocurrency, it's as if the people are slowly seeing the convenience and security cashless payments offer to their everyday lives. For years, scan-to-pay stores are just confined within the walls of malls and luxurious places but it seems that we're slowly bringing it to the masses and eventually, it will be the norm to pay only with our smartphones and pre-loaded accounts--and in the future, possibly even cryptocurrencies.

From the article:

Quote
PayMaya equipped at least 200 vendors in the New Marulas Public Market with QR payments acceptance, allowing Valenzuela residents to pay for their day-to-day needs purchased from the market using only the PayMaya app installed on their phones.

Gonna be interesting how things turn out here. I'm sure that their will be challenges both on the vendor and consumer side in the beginning. But I do like the concept though, most probably if this project turns out to be a success, other big public market will also test it out as there are most progressive city around Metro Manila like Makati City that can take advantage of cashless "pamama-lengke". And imagine your mom just bringing her cell-phone and telling her "kumare" about the advantages of using digi-payments, that would be awesome!!!  Grin

This would be a great start on making a place through a cashless society. As the current president of the Philippines would hopefully open up the minds of each fellow Filipino to patronize digital payments and go with the trends. This would  have a big impact on the community i guess.

A great start. Indeed an easy way to pay digital. We all know that there are so ways to pay online with different marketing strategy. And i am one of that takingvthis advantages and it really give me a lot of savings. But as we all know, safety here is now a question. I mean, if i want to go to a public places like public market, i will not bring my phone due to security purposes. Not trying to give a bad impression but this is what really happens especially in this christmas season. But still, this is a very good start for us.

Its very interesting because many people are buying goods for everyday living and hopefully the salary are converted to bitcoin so that all people in that area will using the cryptocurrency.

This is the third news where another area in the phils are into bitcoin. hopefully thr whole manila will adopt this to see what is the benefit of using bitcoin.

That's true sir I'm also here in the Philippines, cashless payment in supermalls or even the big  groceries here was used any different card to swipe for payment it's very usable it was also sample of cashless method I think it was start to use several years ago. Its better if cashless payment method using Bitcoin that's very nice for Filipino people.

This kind of technology is mostly seen in the neighboring countries of the Philippines. Countries like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan are using cashless payment but mostly it is seen in the shopping malls but this step in using cashless payment in a public place is a big step forward considering that the Philippines is a third world country. I just hope that it will gain support from their local government in Valenzuela and support form the people because it is such a good project.

It is usually faster to enter a cashless society in a small country. This should be just the beginning. It will take years to complete the cashless society. Countries with large land areas may be the slowest in the cashless social process.

I'd say that there are quite a lot of countries that are already going this cashless route.

From the articles that I've read, it's quite common for marketplaces and supermarkets to accept cardless payments in the form of WeChat or Alipay, and cash is becoming rarer and rarer. Seems like the trend has grown in other countries as well.

It is important to note though that being cashless doesn't necessarily mean using blockchain technology, or using a decentralized cryptocurrency. People realize the cumbersomeness of cash, but they might not realize the detriments of fiat yet. It's actually quite interesting how in a lot of the countries, third party companies are actually the ones facilitating the majority of the cashless transactions, as opposed to traditional banks (I think in this case as well with PayMaya).

-snip-

Not in the case of the Philippines, I'd say. It is only very recent that some malls and supermarkets started accepting scan-to-pay technology, and a few years back, it's just credit and debit cards reigning the payment scene for these stores. Also, given that the 'palengke' setup is anything but advanced and technological, I'd say it's entirely different since this isn't anything compared to the marketplaces of progressive countries and China, Singapore, and other countries that uses WeChat and Alipay. I'm somewhat stoked on this idea being spread out on other cities as well, though knowing the demographics of the urbanized and marginalized community in the Metros, I'm also concerned that this might induce the rise of theft and robbery within these marketplaces.

People are now starting to feel comfortable in using cashless or virtual money to buy the things that they need and wants, that is why there are now few market in the Philippines that are now turning to be cashless for fast transaction.

Seems like a lot of governments around the world are realising that investing in cashless forms of payment would probably be more worth it in the long run, compared to developing new banknotes with newer anti-counterfeiting measures.

And people in a lot of countries have already grown accustomed to transacting with cashless means, which is definitely a huge step from a decade ago when all of this was still just a novelty.

But still, these are fiat currencies that are being transacted, and bitcoin is yet to have any impact in real life marketplace transactions. It would be interesting to see down the line once adoption picks up further, whether bitcoin could potentially operate as an alternative to these cashless payment methods, making it easier for international travellers to pay, etc.

For Fiat then this thing is possible specially merchants can really easily adopt yet e-payments is more convenient and i was surprised that it is already go beyond on the walls because
i do commonly see this on malls which same as you said but now it is already on the public market.Good to see such adoption but i doubt crypto payments wont suit out to merchants
due to volatility.

This is an evidence that cryptocurrencies are really have some brighter future because they are already been adopted by some big businessman. It is good to know that Philippines was enjoying the features of blockchain amd and hoping for the best for their newly adopted business.

This is not related to cryptocurrency, though the concept of cashless payment transaction is somehow can be one of the applications of cryptocurrency in the future. This cashless system functions as debit card, wherein you need to cash in first before you can use them. With this, they have a mobile app.

Did you even read what was written on the original post? Or did you just post here blindly by just reading the topic title? The public market isn't accepting bitcoin or any other crypto currencies. They are just turning "cashless", which means that transactions won't be done through physical cash, but some other means such as e-currencies, mobile app or any other digital payment method. This includes the chances of using crypto currencies too.

Digital transactions are penetrating the market two or three years ago, it is just so surprising that Philippines is adappting to the digital technology by allowing such transactions to be visible in common areas like public market and your local convenience stores. I think the cryptocurrency is yet to be adapted -- they are just waiting for by-laws and some amendments to protect the rights of every consumer and investors trading with such. Overall, this news is a good one considering Philippines is one of the most watched out for Third world country. Kudos to Valenzuela City.

Philippines is in the south east Asia, the country accepts the crypto currencies and they could recognize the the merits and de merits of the digital or the crypto currencies .A country is turning in to a cash less society means the public market is turning  and in the place of the cash a full fledged cell phone will be handling the situation successfully. So that the buyer and the seller will be happy. Such a very brave step the country has adopted for the convenience of the people. This is indeed a part of the economic development of the country By adopting the crypto currency or the bitcoin which will be more convenient and trust worthy to the society because all crypto transactions are recorded in an electronic ledger  with the block chain technology. The transaction details once it is encrypted means it cannot be altered so by the implementation of the block chain technology it leads the entire community in to corruption free world

The mass adoption is now happening, consumers are now prefer to use digital transaction than fiat transaction. They are now aware to the advantages that they can get through the use of digital money.
