It could be any number of things really. Could be as simple as his wife logging in and reading his post history for sentimental reasons.

More likely it could be that the account got hacked due to the previous security breaches, and was locked after waking up from a long period of inactivity. This would make sense as it was logged into the 1 time, and then nothing. It would be interesting to see how many other times it had been accessed prior to the last time.

his Email was hacked a long time ago and since that email was used on bitcointalk too, it was used to reset his account password and the hacker used that new password to log into his account here and if my memory serves he was making some spam posts on the forum with that account, regarding SegWit, bitcoin unlimited and scaling war...

his account was locked by theymos later https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1847311.msg18382142#msg18382142

This was discussed around the time it happened and I believe it was speculated at the time that it was his wife or other family member that accessed the account.

After the death of Hall, his computer could be used by anyone. He also had a lot of detractors who could hack into his account. I think we'll never know. Hall was a very good man and we will remember him forever.

Some thoughts:

Anybody (either a hacker or a family member) who controls the Hell's account, can't do much more than logging. The account is one of most famous in the bitcoin history as in bitcointalk history, so each activity of the account (after knowing the death of his real owner) will be quickly tracked and discussed.

As i don't expect a stupid hacker to do such a bad move, i don't see any reason to discuss this over and over again.

At most cases, any user can just leave a comment in his trust feedbacks, warning newcomers that account is out of control of his original owner and add the date of his death.

R
