I'd like to have a private discussion with a closed set of participants. It does not necessarily be private for reading, but posting must definitely be restricted to that set. Does this forum offer a possibility for this kind of discussion? If yes, how?

Not really. You could make it self-moderated and delete posts from people who aren't allowed to post there.

Why not just PM the people you want to chat with and have a private conversation on skype or something?

Indeed I was thinking about flying on the other side of the world and sit together on a table.

It's a group of ~30 persons in different time zones. Asynchronous conversation seems to fit quit well for the beginning.
