Yesterday there was a bomb threat in the small city where I work.  I heard about another one in the slightly bigger city just north of here, and several more in San Francisco.  It turns out the threats were sent through email, mostly to organisations, schools, and businesses world wide.  Apparently there were no actual bombs found, but a lot of buildings were evacuated yesterday due to the threats.

Scammers are getting sloppy, and desperate I guess.

News article: https://www.coindesk.com/us-government-issues-advice-over-bitcoin-bomb-threat-emails

Scammers ransom address: 1LVZqNEUHnhGxZ2qgJApd3qbHWZtpMhkAo

Reported content of the email:

Hello. I write you to inform you that my recruited person has hidden a bomb (tronitrotoluene) in the building where your business is located. My recruited person assembled an explosive device according to my instructions. It can be hidden anywhere because of its small size, it can not destroy the supporting building structure, but there will be many wounded people if it explodes. My recruited person keeps the building under the control. If any strange activity, panic or cop is noticed he will power the device. I can withdraw my recruited person if you pay. You pay me $20'000 in Bitcoin and the device will not explode, but do not try to cheat -I ensure you that I will call off my man solely after 3 confirmations in blockchain.

Here is my BTC address : 1LVZqNEUHnhGxZ2qgJApd3qbHWZtpMhkAo

You must transfer bitcoins by the end of the workday. If you are late with the transaction the bomb will detonate. Nothing personal this is just a business, if I do not receive the money and the explosive device explodes, next time other companies will pay me more bitcoins, because it isnt a one-time action. For security and anonymity , I will no longer enter this email account. I check my address every 30 minutes and if I see the transaction I will order my person to get away.

If an explosion occurred and the authorities notice this email: We arent a terrorist society and do not assume liability for acts of terrorism in other places.

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

This guy either thinks like a 12-year-old or is just completely retarded. Even my grandpa would not take his threat seriously considering the way he has conveyed it. You see, even after 24+ hours after that email no one gives two fucks about sending him even a Satoshi. Idiot will be arrested soon and put behind the bars for the rest of his life. Torrent exit nodes can't save him if FBI starts getting serious about finding him.

This sounds to me a like the perfect way to kick Bitcoin while it is down. Does anyone think this is a viable method to get Bitcoin payouts? Seems designed to serve as a freak show to give Bitcoin more bad press over. I think this may have been the purpose of much of the Bitcoin ransomware in the past as well.

In general, all bumb threats are taken seriously.

Does anyone think this is a viable method to get Bitcoin payouts?
Some say there is no bad publicity. What worries me much more though is if this becomes a big thing. Imagine this: terror threats with the capacity of internet spammers! All it takes is one actual bomb, and millions of spam emails will make it impossible to know which is real.

"no bad publicity" is horse shit, especially when geopolitics and the very institution of banking financial servitude are involved. They are conditioning the population that crypto is used for evil things, preparing us for the day they enact serious restrictions on it. It IS going to happen, it is just a matter of time. Watch as you see the state sanctioned good coins, and all the other coins become the Iranian, ISIS, Russian, drug dealer, North Korean, hacker, Chinese, global warming coins.

They are paving the way for the crypto lock down so they can then pull the plug on the regular financial system so crypto doesn't serve as a lifeboat for escape, because every dollar you lose in the fire sale they get to keep. Really though the money is just a tool to extract total control and submission from all of us.

I see these all the time. Lots are being emailed out claiming to have hacked into your webcam and have secret footage of you in bad situations. Pay the bitcoin ransom or it all goes online. It gives bitcoin a bad name, but hopefully no-one will fall for it

It is sextortion and as you can see from this website: https://www.bitcoinabuse.com/reports sadly some people make loads doing this.

Makes me think if we need some sorth of rep system integrated in any altcoin client.
