At the height of crypto boom I purchased about 20 something GPU to build 4-5 rigs. Now few of them failed and for the STRIX asus and EVGA ones, they promptly replaced the broken unit, which I would like to give kudos.
However nvidia manufactured GTX1080 FE-s I purchased, two of them has failed and nvidia will not replace them demanding proof of receipt. I bought it 2nd hand from ebay so I dont have receipt nor purchase date. I wonder what I should do these units?

if I part out, anything can be taken out that is potentially valuable? Or should I try selling on ebay with huge price reduction for those who wants to tackle the problem?
I may try to at least determine the symptom of the problem during next few weeks.

Thanks.,

You can see date of purchase on ebay or in your paypal's transaction history (or check your visa card's transaction histories if possible).  I don't think you'll save something valuable from them, maybe it's better to sell on ebay. Now I checked prices on ebay and seems it's average 200$ for broken gtx1080. It's so pity to lost such a great card, btw I never buy from ebay, always check prices on nowinstock and get some good catchs when I am very lucky.

there was a buying frenzy, i was not aware that nvidia itself will dishonor its warranty, evga and asus did great stuff on replacement, i am not sure whether nvidia will honor ebay purchase receipt, the best i can do is to inquire the seller because i have kept the detailed log of the purchase: seller account and serial No. etc. But if the seller is a volume seller business type, chances are they will not even bother giving the purchase date and receipt so probably i get stuck with those.
I may try to list on ebay at fair price stating it is defective and take your chance type of sale.

eBay's indeed a decent place to sell as long as you explicitly state that your listing is for a broken and non-working item, as some people on the site like to dispute orders because they thought the item purchased was in working order. I don't think you're going to get a better rate for your card anywhere else other than eBay, as I don't see many people buying broken items on this forum or anywhere else for that matter.

You can use this link (click here) for a price reference on eBay for completed listings for broken GTX 1080 cards in the United States eBay (.com).

How did it fail exactly?

Depending on what the issue is you might be able to fix it yourself. Does it hang the unit when Windows starts or when mining starts? If so you might just need to do a rehot on the GPU. Just google "gpu oven" and follow the instructions.

Since the GPU is dead already you might as well try this. Or just sell it on eBay and list it "AS-IS" and select the "Parts" section and state that its a broken GPU.

how much for one of the broken units as a whole?   I have the knowledge to attempt a repair.

I also have a FE style 1080 in my main computer;  to use as a reference.

Link to my batch and script resources here.

Oк update, one of them has speckles across the screen in graphics mode. In text mode there is no speckles. But who would want to use gtx1080 in text mode. Ethminer is working ok for several hours. I do remember free months back, ewbf miner was not working with this card, i might try again.

Second unit appears you be jyst fine, i can faintly remember it was not showing too Ada a pci device. I Am testing this unit extensively: playing games like bioshock, and do regular chores and see if it works.

I see in graphics mode, speckles appear, at least in text mode I am not seeing. assuming the GPU's own memory used in graphics mode and either BIOS or another small segment of system memory used in text mode, there might be something wrong with GPU memory or perhaps traces between memory to outside world has defect, not sure.
