You can read tons of articles and threads that are suggesting that they are going to be the "next bitcoin" and its up to you if you'll believe them. Many has tried it before to claim that but never succeed. Do your own  research and that will be your own tool to determine what coins are worth it.

Investing in altcoin could be a good thing to do right now, with the growth of cryptocurrency. I think it will be so much needed for everyone to utilize cryptocurrency in the future. So investing in it right now will be worth it. but be sure to choose the correct atcoins since there are so many scam coins present in the market.

The most fundamental if you want to invest in crypto is just look at their product or project, like how the development have been going, since day one the project has been launched, and how was the community of the project. And you may listen to some expert if you want, but never make decision, based (only) on those expert statement. Other thing is just like traditional investment, the technical like market-cap, price movement yearly, monthly and so on.

As you say that there are thousands of altcoins at the moment and there are lots of altcoins that are dead and have no value.
For me, the benchmark for determining an altcoin that has potential is to look at its rank in the coinmarketcap.
The higher the transaction volume ranking, the more likely the coin will be successful. Choose and specify, I think this is an easy step.

There is no really a one go tool to find all the information of an altcoin, that thing you have to do it yourself. It's important for one to learn background checking or researching to better learn the fundementals on what he's going to invest to.

There will not have any automatic tools to help you to do that. If have, it will be very general and your decision about what you want to invest must come from your personal analysis

Although there is no tool that can analyze altcoin, I think that the current technology is so developed. Many things don't have to be only done by our brain. Tool can't completely replace people's decisions, but it can help us collect and analyze many data. Just like Google is doing a lot of big data analysis, such as the ranking of the website which I believe it is more accurate than people. If we can find a good algorithm and collect enough comprehensive information, why can't we make a tool for analyzing or even ranking a coin?

What i know is that there is no such things as tool to find a good coins that are created. What we can do to choose a good project would be our self to check on a coins thoroughly and deeply so we could find good coins to invest on.
