I think Google is wise to this, and it isn't particularly helpful these days.

It can help with traffic if you can influence the linking text.

Some of them have paid accounts like Ahrefs. It`s really easy to make an analysis of competitors` backlinks, then find the needed emails and outreach webmasters.
