Just use an exchange instead of trading with individuals, some reputable services: Coinbase, Coinmama, BitPanda.
These are secure for buying and selling, that doesn't mean they're meant for storing your coins, just use them for trading and withdraw your bitcoins ton your personal wallet once you're finished.

For someone who shills Coinswitch (who claims to accept payment via credit card, or in other words fiat) regularly, it's surprising to see that you ask such question. I would say the best alternative to Shapeshift is Coinswitch exchange. It is an exchange aggregator of many leading exchanges. It supports more than 400 cryptocurrencies. Without creating multiple accounts, the user can trade all the coins at 1 place. No KYC is required for trading any cryptocurrency.

If you feel unsafe or not sure about services outside of your country, try to find a crypto local exchanges there first. It's way less hassle since surely it will have an accessed on some of the popular payments method available on your country. At most of the cases, there should be at least a local exchange based on your country of course if crypto there is not illegal or something along those lines. If you are having trouble finding a reputable one, please head on your local section here in this forum and asked some assistance there if they know some.

I'd say it depends on where you are but the safest and fastest way to buy Bitcoin is to buy it on trusted exchanges, just find an exchange that will allow you to use your local currency or bank account to buy it. As much as possible avoid transacting directly to a person, especially if you only know them through online, because there are lots of scammers in this market but if you want to buy from another person be sure to use an escrow service but of course you will pay for their service, so buying on an exchange is still the easiest, safe and less hassle way. I usually buy Bitcoin from local exchange that has a license to operate here in my country.

Usually I use localbitcoins for buying/selling btc with fiat currencies. This service is acting as escrow and you can choose your locations and find all options for exchange. All buyers and sellers have rating based on users reviews.

Most buying options require KYC these days. Since your KYC documents can be used to steal your identity and exchanges are prone to hacks, you need to carefully choose a reputable exchange. I would avoid doing KYC at more than one exchange. If you have access to Coinbase Pro or Gemini, I would recommend them. Next in line would be Bitstamp. Some of those threads go back to 2016. This ecosystem moves really fast. I actually think this question ought to be re-hashed every few months.

Everything depends on which Fiat currency you have.
Of you have USD or EUR, you have far too many good options.
However in Latin America for example there are very few exchanges. You have to search locally where to find a good exchange.

No matter how new you are in here you must have heard about exchanges and their various purposes, they are their to enable you buy and sell your cryptocurrency, but you must carefully pick them, google about it and get to know the most trusted cryptocurrency exchange, that will be the safest option for you Trading directly with an individual is another option but very risky and even more risky for a newbie like yourself,so it's best you obliterate that option from your mind and make use of exchanges and afterwards transfer your bitcoins into your bitcoins wallet, always use a hardware wallet.ledger nano and trezor are your best options

In my opinion, the most secure and best way of buying bitcoin is to trade at a leading exchanges. Some of the leading exchanges that support fiat currency exchanges are Coinbase, CEX.IO, LocalBitcoins and Coinswitch. Before buying on any platform make sure to check the reviews and services of an exchange. Also, check the different currencies that are supported with which one can buy cryptos. Some of the exchanges will support buying bitcoin worldwide. One such exchange I have used is Coinswitch exchange that supports to buy bitcoin worldwide.

Check your local marketplaces and see if you will find someone who does business by selling bitcoins. If you cant find with localbitcoins, I think that there are groups dedicated for crypto trading and community near you.

Luno's fees are pretty cutthroat which I experienced when exchanging cryptos last time. For p2p, best so far is Remitano/ Localbitcoins. You get to directly deal with local buyers and they have an escrow system to facilitate transactions.

There a lot of legit way to get digital currency with your money! I become more confident to reply if you've mentioned your residence. BTW, If you have not yet looked at upon paxful, localbitcoins, canbase I suggest you do so ASAP. Nowadays F2F deal with local buyers gone crazy. Don't forget to check it out.
That is right. As one onecall123 mentioned that we need to know your location as there are restrictions to each country in buying bitcoin. I suggest you discuss this with your fellow countrymen so they can give you the best advise. Go to the home page here at bitcointalk, scroll down and look for the appropriate discussion board for your country. It's better that way as you can type in your native language and it reduces the risk of getting false information.
