Hi, I just read this article from coindesk: https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-miner-linzhi-calls-out-project-coders-for-proposed-asic-ban

Where Linzhi states that an asic for ProgPow is on their plans. It is possible/profitable or it is just a statement to put pressure on ethereum's devs for changing eth's POW from ethash to ProgPow?

What do you think?  Huh

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

I think they are fucking morons for attacking a gpu algo.

Simple economics.  there are 10 million gamers.

a 2x 1080ti gaming pc  used to earn  as much as 25 dollars a day if it mined.

many gamers would buy a better gaming setup knowing they could get money back by mining 10-12 hours a day.

This made for a large base for coins.  Asics can never do this and should simply back the fuck off.

Moron motherfuckers killed off most alts with asics.  Took a 1 trillion dollar market cap and dropped it to under

140 billion.  So I personally think  They should leave progpow alone.

https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-miner-linzhi-calls-out-project-coders-for-proposed-asic-ban

"Shenzhen-based miner manufacturer Linzhi has published a statement in response to a “tentative” decision, made by ethereum developers Friday, to block specialized hardware, or ASICs, from securing the platform in exchange for rewards.

This would involve the implementation of “ProgPoW” in an upcoming upgrade, a code change that is optimized for graphic card, or GPU, hardware.

In today’s statement, Linzhi said it was “shocked” by the move, stating, “We reject arbitrary enforcement of rules, and request clear and equal guidelines to be established for all hardware makers.”

The statement continued:

“Today we are calling upon the ethereum developers to publish rules and requirements for what constitutes a good ProgPoW ASIC maker.”

Elaborating on the statement in an email to CoinDesk, director of operations Wolfgang Spraul said that such rules could include more transparency, or even monthly audits of hardware companies by ethereum developers.

“The rules should probably include defining better relationships between hardware makers, miners, and developers,” Spraul said, “That’s up to the ethereum developers to define, we think.”

Following the meeting on Friday at which the developers approved the proposal, discussion regarding ProgPoW has escalated, with several prominent community members coming forward to argue against the change.

ASICs for ProgPoW?

Linzhi is currently designing a chip for ethereum’s current mining algorithm, Ethash. Having expended $4 million on its production, the upcoming miner claims significant advantages over former ethereum ASIC designs.

In conversation with CoinDesk, Spraul also said that pending its implementation into ethereum, the company will research the feasibility of building specialized ASIC hardware for ProgPoW.

“I can publicly confirm today that we intend to study the feasibility, and then build, ProgPoW ASICs,” Spraul said.

Because ProgPoW changes ethereum’s underlying mining algorithm, Ethash, to be more memory-heavy, the code switch is said to make GPU hardware competitive with ASICs.

Proponents of ProgPoW say that if hardware designers try to build ProgPoW ASICs – which is to say a specialized chip with the sole function of computing ProgPoW – it would just end up resembling GPU hardware.

Still, Spraul denied this, stating that “Hardware innovation is non-linear,” and “We can accelerate ProgPoW by a factor of 3x to 8x.”

Yesterday, ethereum classic underwent a 51 percent attack – something that the cryptocurrency’s Twitter account claimed may have come from Linzhi. Spraul pushed back on such claims, saying “They are entirely baseless.”

Linzhi seemed to have spent 4 million and will now be fucked if they go progpow.

Good and I hope they spend another 4 million trying to build a progpow chip which then gets bricked. By upscale of progpow.

if Linzhi manages to make a ProgPow ASIC then they will effectively go up against AMD and Nvidia with a GPU. I do hope they make an asic and release some driver for it so that there is a 3rd player in the GPU market.

No you don't  it will just hurt  the market.

There is an economic need for good gpu mining.

A loaf of italian bread needs flour.

crypto mining needs viable gpu mining.

It does not need  a moron asic builder pillaging a gpu algo.

Meanwhile I continue to mine BCI which is using progpow as its algo.

I don't think Linzhi stand a chance. AMD and Nvida are on the cutting edge making a computation device and if ProgPow is so well matched it is highly unlikely that Linzhi will be able out to perform them. look how long it took to get an eth asic out and it does not do so well against GPUs'  just cheaper to buy and easier to setup but when it come sot compute power vs power it is on par.

Indeed. Crypto mining needs expansion & diversity. When ASICs got deployed on 2018 (cryptonight, ethash, equihash, etc) market got shrunk & crashed making it shitty for everyone.

I expect ProgPow to be effective & efficient enough, so no matter how much it is invested for any ASIC builder their resources get wasted in the end.

I've just started to invest in crypto mining, and i was concidering buying an asic for mining ethereum (chose not to, because i'd like to be able to mine something else later on)

I have a question.

If theres alot of ethash miners who runs asics, and they're going to change from ethash to PP - how would it affect the currency?

Would it benefit gpu miners more than it does now, or am i missing anything :-) - if yes, how would it benefit? would it be easier to mine for gpu miners?

A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids a problem.

It's about time ETH devs starting to realise that 51% attack is not impossible if the ASICs for ETH gets more efficient and only a few has the power to mass produce and run it. Moreover, any hardfork in the future will also be hindered because of this.

Are there stats available to show the current ratio of GPU vs ASIC mining on ethash?

Bitmain, innosillicon and pandaminer have ethash ASICS out there.

Not sure why coins don't have a policy of changing the algo if ASICs are made.  XMR seems to do it and it works seems like laziness on the devs part.

bullshit...

They spent 4 million dollars to build a ETHASH ASIC and could not do it to date. Bitmain released a ETHASH ASIC almost one year ago...
These are empty words. Looks like a big cry baby.
