This was filled overnight in my timezone in not time ... I applied early the next morning but I still had no chance in a first-come-first-served campaign.

I'll watch the thread and hope a spot will be freed. Will I need to reapply if a spot open or will you keep my application in a priority "line"?
I don't want to promote gambling-related signatures for personal ethical reasons and there are few BTC-paying campaigns of other kinds like BitBlender.

Sure, applying early might increase your chance to get accepted but what matters the most is your post history I believe. I think you are right. I also had the same situation. There are people who applied after me although I was very very late to the party but they got accepted. I am sure Hhampuz is considering post history.

In less than 6 hours we had 6 pages of applications, I found a lot of good people and I accepted them accordingly. Merit Received in the last 120 days, post history and trust were factors that moved me one way or another.
