You want to set the f-stop for a narrow focal range and then focus on the subject.

The "Bokeh" effect is easy to obtain from a distance, just zoom in to your subject and you'll notice it. You want to reduce your "depth of field", so you want to manually use a lower f stop (large aperture) also known as shallow focus. The Canon should have an aperture mode setting or use the full manual mode.

I agree, as a photographer you really need to find the right angles and of course timing. However, if you don't know how to properly set up your camera then obviously, all your photographs will just be ordinary and will not stand out.

That's why the OP is asking for help here, and I think someone has already gave a good answer for him. Maybe he should comeback and tell us more, however, I'm not expecting him as I'm sure he is enjoying playing with his camera more.

You ideally want a lens with a low-f-number, Canon 50mm f/1.2L and depends on what the shot is. A good people's lens/wedding ones will generally be 85-105. However, a 105 f1.4 can easily run $2500-$3500, a very expensive lens.

Try get yourself a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. It is a relatively cheap lens that will give you the results you are looking for. I love mine.

You will need a lens with a large f-top (1.4, 1.8, 2, 2.8,).  The next best thing you can do is physically get as close to your subject as you can while using the largest f-stop.  On your lens, the best you can do is use f-stop of 3.5.  You can still get decent blurry background but it will not look as good as a larger f-stop lens.  A little practice and you will figure it out.  Good luck.
