It was increased not so long ago and you are not alone paying the new few for copper membership.
Could have been due to the low price fo BTC at the moment.

OP, you also have the option to pay for copper membership with Grin (2.25 x $8.81=$19.82) will save you around $3 or $4 dollars.

Or, OP can still choose the hard way and can start to create a few meaningful posts, in this case in a few weeks time he can become a Jr. member with signature, bounty, etc... And with nearly a dozen of merited post the Member rank is also accessible, so if it's not too urgent to become a Member, he/she can save the whole amount (in bitcoin or even in grin), and have the same privileges...
