There seems to be a whole hotch potch of problems at the moment. We have over moderation coupled with under moderation, and spamming together with a lack of posting. There are also a load of boring personal attacks and whingeing threads. I'd like to see a nice clean general discussion board that is open to everybody from newbie to Legendary , and that is kept clean, courteous, and informative. So how can this be created and maintained?

I suggest a club room that is moderated by 12 legendaries who aren't going to bitch and fight with each other. They can have total control over posting and threads on that board, and they can decide on the topics, subject to certain guidelines set up when the room is implemented.

Sort of like Serious Discussion but allow newbies? Or perhaps more like Wall Observer, which does allow newbies. Signatures allowed or not?

I think everything should be allowed provided it doesn't breach the general forum rules. It would have to have English as it's primary language, but maybe other languages could be allowed provided there was a translation quote in the same post. Let the legendaries monitor the posting, and crop quoting and make other such changes. It would be handy if frequent spammers could be blocked, so maybe a couple of the legendaries should be real forum mods.

Will those 12 legendary members be hired as full-time moderators for that board? Sounds like a lot of workload considering the number of members we have on the forum and assuming by that the traffic this new board is going to get. It wouldn't be possible to be well-moderated unless the moderators are working full-time on it leaving all other things they have going on.

Let me approach this from another angle. How exactly would this new board solve the issues that you mention in the OP - moderation, spam, personal attacks, etc? Just via stricter moderation? Extra rules (no insults etc)?

Most of the possible topics are already reasonably well covered in the existing boards. This is a bit of an issue with SD/IT boards already. So not sure if the new board (code name JC) would get that much traffic unless it manages to suck it out of the other boards.

@alone, it's 2 hours a day for each...

I can see what jet cash is talking about though with a lot of the wingeing. It's as if he wants a meta full of useful discussions rather that "infographic", "merit", "I'm banned for plagiarism but I only did it 47 times".

I think the idea could pretty much be accomplished in a single thread, kind of like what the Wall Observer does, except with additional moderators (somehow). Probably should put it in a place where sigs aren't allowed because I admit it does become distracting and a reason for people to post utterly meaningless comments. Then of course, people would have to know how to find it...

That also then can't be done in a single thread...

I just want somewhere where one can have sensible and mature discussions, and not have the threads and topics swamped with spam, kindergarten threads and petty bickering. There is a wealth of knowledge here, and some brilliant members, but it is hard to gain interaction with and between them. board

I don't think the legendaries should be paid. If the board is likely to be swamped, then one may have to look at some sort of membership criteria. If the posters can be restricted to responsible members, then it should be largely self-moderating.

I really threw the idea open in the hope that we could create such an area. Of course, it may be that an existing board such as the Bitcoin discussion could be converted to this concept.

This is Bitcointalk, not Elitismtalk. Just use the ivory tower or serious discussion for this, both are pretty dead at the moment and serve this purpose.

On a side note, you're pretty much implying the current mods suck at their jobs by suggesting this.

Why is it elitist? Serious discussion and Ivory Tower are far more elitist.

I think the mods have a difficult job and are overloaded. They appear to be making hasty decisions, and not to have guidelines or an agreement about many general rulings.

So, only elites are able to have sensible and mature discussions, without kindergarten threads?

I don't know if you are saying that only rich people are mature and not in kindergarten anymore, or if that's a different elite.

Either way, I think jet Cash elitist board is already going on ivory tower and on technical discussion boards

Who started this elitist crap? I said everybody from newbie up, and I also suggested a method for non-English speakers to contribute.  At the moment the only place they can do this is in Fit to Talk. This would bring the capability back to Bitcoin Talk.

It would be more democratic than any other board, and with 12 (say) legendaries, there could even be a type of appeal process.

Not wanting listen to rubbish topics that one left behind in the kindergarten isn't elitist imho.

The forum is not over moderated, you are just not happy because they moved your thread in a more appropriate section

theymos seems to prefer fewer rules and more discretion for moderators... which may or may not align with what you're suggesting. Perhaps the effort that would be needed to maintain order on the new board would be better spent cleaning up the existing boards if there is a general consensus on what "cleaning up" entails. On the other hand, if there is no such consensus then the new board would probably suffer the same fate.

I thought about something like this from actmyname's thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5104827.0

Something like a wave of self-moderated threads in sections where people comment recycled ideas over and over.

You could do the same thing, just make a self-moderated thread in the section you want, and if your post gets enough interest put it on you to monitor and moderate it. It's that part that's hard for the person moderating, to constantly weed out pointless posts.

I admit that the moving of my thread triggered my line of thought. I do not accept that the move was correct or reasonable. The whole point of the thread was to garner newbies opinions ( and to award a few merits on the side ). moving the thread to a board that is unlikely to be visited by newbies is an elitist action ( to hijack an opinion by one of my detractors ), and made the whole thread useless.

Anyway I started this discussion in the hope that a few of the ideas and suggestions that it has provoked can be used to improve some of the other boards. People have been suggesting that something has to be done for months now, so my opinions are hardly new or unique.

I suggest you set up a self moderated thread in the appropriate section and include a clear set of instructions for posting in the OP. You can curate it yourself.

12 legendaries who aren't going to bitch and fight with each other.
Yeah, good luck with that.  Pose a problem to 12 Legendary members, and you'll get 13 different opinions.

We've already got Ivory Tower and Serious Discussion, and I don't think having exclusive areas or 'elite' moderators is going to help much of anything.  I hate to be that pessimistic, but that's how I think it is.  All of this drama is basically about the most recent changes to the trust system, and who's on DT1.  I'm not sure how that's going to be resolved.  TECSHARE and OgNasty aren't going to be happy unless they're back on DT1/DT2, and the troll faction (cryptohunter and the like) never did anything that would even warrant consideration of them being on even DT2.

As I said in another thread, these days I'd much rather try to be a good merit source and find merit-worthy posts by lower-ranked members than to engage in the trust system battle.  Seems to me like that's a better way to spend my time, but even then it's very frustrating to read through threads in sections like Economics, where most of the good posts are written by Hero/Lengendary members.  Finding a solution to meriting the under-merited members (if they even exist; I have my doubts at this point) would be a priority over starting up an exclusive section.

Creating a club could lead to more conspiracy theories and more fighting, too.  I don't think the forum needs less inclusivity (I know that sounds very SJW, sorry) right now.

I like this idea, it definetely needs to be tweaked here and there, but I would like this idea be a real thing.

Just like how VIPs and Donators have access to a special board, we could actually keep a board for discussions that's helpful, that's more or less diverted to guiding things for anyone who's looking for new information or to debate about something real.

My view over this idea is entirely different, and I quite don't really know how to explain it. I just want this forum to be a place to actually ask questions around ffs, and less of drama. I have read more about DT and merit in the past year, than what I have of bitcoin. WHAT THE FUCK EVEN!
