This Company Will Pay You $100,000 to Give Up Your Smartphone for a Year
By Spooky on December 14th, 2018 Category: News

Enhanced water company Vitaminwater recently launched a contest challenging entrants to give up their smartphones and tablets for a whole year. That’s a tough thing to do in this day and age, but the Coca Cola-owned company is ready to make it worth your while by putting up a $100,000 prize.

Vitaminwater’s #nophoneforayear challenge requires entrants to go a full 365 days without using a smartphone. That means giving up their own phone and tablet as well as agreeing not to use anyone else’s handhelds either. The selected person will have to sign a contract committing to no smartphone usage for the duration of the contest, and if they are found to have adhered to the strict rule for the duration of the contract, they will be rewarded with $100,000. Sounds easy enough, but first you have to convince the company that you’re the right person for the job.

To enter this unusual contest, you first have to a photo to Twitter or Instagram telling Vitamin Water why you need a break from your smartphone, and use the hashtags #nophoneforayear and #contest. Submitted entries will be judged based on creativity, brand relevance, humor and quality. You have until January 8 to enter the contest, and the company will announce the selected participant on January 22.

It’s worth pointing out that the selected person will not be required to go completely phone-free. In fact, Vitaminwater will provide them with a “1996 era mobile phone” complete with a monthly plan for voice communication only.

Vitaminwater has confirmed that the contest is not some cruel prank, and brand manager Natalia Suarez told CNBC that it was simply an ingenious way to challenge people to do something interesting with their time.

“We don’t think there’s anything more boring than mindlessly scrolling through your phone, and this is an opportunity to take that stance against routine and give someone $100,000 to do something uniquely awesome with their time,” Suarez said.

You’re probably wondering how Vitaminwater plans on checking if the selected person actually respected their end of the deal. The complete list of rules has not yet been released, but the company did mention that the chosen participant will have to take a lie detector test before being awarded the $100,000 prize.

Some people couldn’t go a single day without checking their smartphones, and a year is a really long time, so Vitaminwater is also offering a consolation prize of $10,000 if the person selected for their contest goes at least 6 months without using a smartphone.

Oh, and if you’re looking at your handheld wondering if it qualifies as a smartphone, Vitaminwater provides a simple way to check: “if texting is a pleasant experience or you can get on the internet, it’s probably a smartphone”.

No links, no proof. I doubt this will be a real challenge since a lot of people can do it.

Impossible for me, it would mean giving up my job, all my communications. Though the idea of the competition is to show that our life is more satisfying without technologies, I guess

Vitaminwater is offering $100,000 to one person who can go without their smartphone for an entire year.
Contest entries will be accepted on Twitter and Instagram until 11:59 p.m. ET on January 8, 2019.
The selected contestant will be provided with a "1996-era cellular telephone" and an accompanying phone plan to use for one year.
A lie-detector test will help determine whether you stuck to the rules for the full 365 days.

Smartphone addiction is no joke — and neither are the very real health risks it poses. But if you're not willing to forgo your own device for a chance at less anxiety or better sleep, maybe you'd do it for, say, $100,000?

It's a bet Vitaminwater is willing to take.

That's right, the Coca-Cola-owned brand is offering $100,000 to one person who can go without their smartphone for an entire year. Vitaminwater announced the contest on Tuesday.

    —vitaminwater® (@vitaminwater) December 11, 2018

Here's how the "Scroll Free For a Year" contest will work, according to the company's website:

Apply on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #nophoneforayear and #contest, telling Vitaminwater why you need a break from your smartphone and what you'd do with your free time. You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on January 8, 2019, to enter.
Vitaminwater will pick one entry by January 22, 2019. If selected, you'll be contacted via the social-media account you used to enter.
The winner will be provided with a "1996-era cellular telephone" and an accompanying phone plan to use for one year. They'll also sign a contract committing to no smartphone usage for the duration of the contest. If found to have adhered to the rules at the end of the year, they'll be rewarded with $100,000.

If selected, you'll still be able to use a laptop or desktop computer, but you won't be allowed to even touch a smartphone for a full 365 days. The rules also state that if you can only go six months, you'll win only $10,000. (Hey, that's still no small change.)

It's unclear how Vitaminwater will verify you played by the rules, but a lie-detector test will be involved, according to FOX2now.com.

Thousands of social-media users have already thrown their hats in the ring.

Ok, I don't want to click the link but obviously this is a marketing ploy for the company. Of course, I think they can find a lot of people willing to take the challenge because of the attractive prize.

But I guess, they will just choose one person only for this challenge and will follow the progress like how is he/she doing without his smartphone or if he/she can really maintain the agonising year without your phone around. We all know that every corner of the world, you can find someone with at least one smart phones, so this is going to be interesting.

I think 1000 USD is very little money for giving up not being informed for 1 year, we have been accustomed to this technology, and practically we depend on the phones, 1000 USD would see it as a very low sum for the tremendous sacrifice. 10K USD is a very good sum to think about ...

This is fucking brilliant marketing, and I'll tell you why. It's because the hardest part would be getting chosen by vitamin water to be a contestant; and in the end, they'll choose only the ones who'll lose (if they don't fake the contest at all) while getting millions of social media hits, likes, comments, and hashtags for a whole year! It's like employing Instagram influencers without paying them.
