So wait, this is the Google keyboard, but on an Apple machine (yes, I actually am almost Apple illiterate), so you could never do that on Apple before?

Suppose the next step will be a Bitcoin Google Doodle perhaps paying tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto. But something tells me I'm too far behind on pop culture to understand why this is a big thing.

Ah but the mainstream dream. BTC

I have read the reddit page on where it was talked about and it seems like not all people who are using Gboards (Google Keyboard) on their iPhones have one. Redditors from Europe and Asian countries said that they don't see it on their keyboards.

Suppose the next step will be a Bitcoin Google Doodle perhaps paying tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto. But something tells me I'm too far behind on pop culture to understand why this is a big thing.
It might not be a big thing as this might just be a social experiment for Google if users would really use the next Bitcoin character they have introduced, making my point stronger is the fact that all users have received the BTC sign on their Gboard isn't even a popular app in the app store so I don't even get why they updated the apple version instead of the Android ones.

It's a clever way to get more people to switch from the apple keyboard to the google equivalent. Also shows that google is more forward thinking than apple

It's strange that it's only for iOS. I have Gboard on my Android and it's up-to-date, but no Bitcoin symbol to be found. I would have expected the update on Android first.

It's a clever way to get more people to switch from the apple keyboard to the google equivalent.

I much prefer the iOS keyboard myself. Maybe I'm just used to it. I doubt you'll find many people willing to switch over for this.

It's interesting how in some countries there's this Apple trend where most people have ipads, iphones, and all that. I've never owned an Apple product and found them overpriced and full of little bugs and structural problems. None of my friends and family own Apple products. It's all Android and PC culture around me.

It's a step in the right direction with that BTC sign but I'm not too hyped since I'm not planning to buy any ios based product.

It's just a matter of time before most mobile os's will have it included in their native keyboard symbol set.

I'm not that hyped about it either, because it's way easier to type BTC than to tap and hold the $ symbol, and then tap on the BTC symbol.

The only good thing about this is the media attention that it has been generating, and for once it's not negative but rather positive, so it's at least doing well in that aspect. The funny thing however is that most Bitcoiners don't see this as being a big deal, but the ones looking at Bitcoin from a distance think it's an important step forwards. I guess that we're spoiled brats. Cheesy

How someone could not think this is BIG?! =(

This is adoption. They have made this probably because they have statistics showing the use of words related to Bitcoin. So a lot of people are typing things related to this and the simple would be useful. They have not just put there because they thought it would be fun. It is based on fact and statistic.

This is a big move as currently if we see that only few countries currency symbol used to exists and now with this introduction it means a lot . This is another sign of how things are progressing and what the future looks like . A big success and future looks more bright .

Is this a signal that mass adoption is coming?
Google is a huge corporation that can integrate this symbol in their own applications. I just wonder why they don't and instead they introduce it on IOS keyboards. Is there an official statement of Google about that?

It seems like that yes, but then again Apple can easily counter by doing the exact same thing and potentially even add more crypto symbols, and then it's Google's turn to make a move.

Overall, this is good news and I'm looking forward to see physical keyboards have a dedicated Bitcoin symbol as well. I'm sure that the loose keyboards and the first laptops doing so will fly off the shelves if that happens.

Bitcoin is a brand on its own, and one that happens to be extremely strong and popular. No surprise that this has been a big thing in the media, even a local news channel covered this.

BSV is not the real Bcash. Bcash is the real Bcash.

It's not really adoption, and neither based on statistics at all, because if that would be the case, they would have seen a massive fall in searches for Bitcoin and other crypto currencies.

In the end, adoption comes in form of making it easy for people to receive funds and start with Bitcoin. If Google natively integrates a Bitcoin wallet in android, people will be able to start with Bitcoin without having to download anything. I could for example ask the cab driver with an android device to pull out his phone so I can send a tip in Bitcoin. That will motivate him to look into Bitcoin and from there talk about it with family, friends, colleagues, etc.

Isn't it a little bit farfetched? It's just a keyboard character and I don't think it somehow remotely connected for the next steps of Google accepting Bitcoin, not even all the Gboard iPhone users have it. The only thing that I can consider a big move done by Google for the whole industry is how they quickly remove their ad prohibition for crypto related products, and that move is still far on what Google's real plans are for the industry. Not unless they have real actions on the industry we cannot really consider little things like this as connected to actual plan.

Who's going to download the 3rd party Gboard app just because it has a Bitcoin symbol? That's got to be an extremely tiny niche of people. Gboard doesn't even have 10K ratings in the Iphone app store. People (like me) are just going to keep using their default Iphone keyboards.

The whole thing is bizarre, almost like a joke. This would actually be kind of cool if they added it to the Android app because Gboard is built-in on many Android phones = many millions of people using it.

probably based on fake news, but would be nice if it were true
while it adds little to nothing to the actual keyboard usability (yeah saves one tap )
it can work wonders to adoption and the news itself should make big waves

https://bitcoinist.com/google-bitcoin-symbol-ios-keyboard/

I knew they will support btc someday but I did not expect that their first step would be like this and yet it is not a small thing. Just imagine all the users who will notice the sign and get curious what it is and they found about that it was bitcoin and the awareness about is much easier to spread. Thanks Google!

This is the reason why I stopped reading news on untrustworthy crypto websites. They are trolling and they are trying to manipulate people's opinion with such a bad way.
There was not any reason of trying to FUD Ethereum, yet they did.

It's a test. If people take these articles for granted without doing their own research, which in this case would be a very easy thing to do, it's actually you that's on the wrong side of the road.

I do however see the fun of this stunt as Bitcoiner, and you can be sure that it was a success if trashy news outlets blindly copy and paste articles just to scoop up a few ad pennies. It wouldn't even surprise me if some of these news outlets have an automated process when it comes to stealing articles from other sites and publish them as their own.

@Naida_BR. Agreed. Some bitcoin news media websites are worse than the forum cave trolls that sometimes share the wrong information or the wrong interpretation of the information.

We need ask the moderators to filter this subforum from the bad sources, I reckon.
