While some individuals and countries (as the case may be) are scared of the technology and talking down on it, some are actually using the advantages it offers for their benefits. The Russian ruling party has decided to use blockchain technology in their voting system.

Local news outlet TASS reports that Russia’s ruling political party, United Russia, has launched a blockchain-based e-voting system, which is expected to be used for the nation’s primary elections that will be held on September 8. Citizens who have passed authorization on the public services portal will have to access to this new voting system.

This is laudable accomplishment by the Russian. It goes to show the world benefits enherent in adopting blockchain technology in our society.

I'm still not buying it. Everything that involves Russia + blockchain to me seems very dubious. Just remember those people behind the country, I don't think they're willing to give up power.

And just imagine blockchain technology is immutable, so it's going to be very difficult to manipulate the result so I doubt that they will really take advantage of the technology specially in elections.

Unfortunately news like this one have zero impact on the crypto community because it is not related to BTC and don't give any volume to cryptocurrencies.
About voting: governmental authorities can still cheat on elections and use blockchain. It will go the same way as it goes with traditional votes.
Meanwhile, in Estonia, everyone is using a centralized online voting system and everything works awesome. Estonian e-government is the best in the world.
So the things that really matters is current political institutions in the country and not what blockchain are they using during elections.

In Ukraine, it began to test since July last year. However while it is unknown at what stage it is, and the budget will have to shell out a tidy sum on such a vote.

Although the selection process with Blockchain has a very important potential for the future, I do not think that it has fully matured yet. In particular, the 51% attack should be completely resolved. Otherwise, computers that are using public services can manipulate the votes.

From the article:

Quote
This development, along with others, suggest that Russia is picking up its pace in adopting blockchain technology. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently ordered the nation’s lawmakers to form a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency space, setting a deadline of July 1. The lower house of the parliament, the State Duma, is also launching an oil-backed cryptocurrency.

LOL. I have heard that since 2017 and up to now, I haven't seen anything concert coming from their government regarding their adoption of Blockchain Technology. It's like a case of 'tug-of-war' game and most of the times, they totally contradict themselves. And also the article say's that citizens needs to go to a public service portal, so we don't know if Russians are willing to go to another rounds of verification just to used this blokchain-based voting system.

Yeah, this is perfect for that Simpsons voting meme.
I might be wrong but I think they have found the perfect way to control the voting process and know who is voting with who.
Anyone who thinks this a better system should think twice, my opinion is that we're witnessing a more centralized and controlled voting system than in the times of Lenin and Hrusciov.

And also the article say's that citizens needs to go to a public service portal, so we don't know if Russians are willing to go to another rounds of verification just to used this blokchain-based voting system.

Do you think the ruling party in Russia gives a damn about what Russians are willing to do?
Russia laws ban 'disrespect' of government and 'fake news'

Do you think you're going to mine on that chain? Or there is going to be a bounty?

Most of the issues with votes are not really related to centralization of the voting process but more about making a decentralized ecosystem for the country so the government could safely issue a new voting token without having control over the vote distribution and control over user wallets.
Russia is a too big country to test such things because in case someone loses his vote then he won't be able to get it back. While remaining of control in the hands of the government won't change anything and will allow them to cheat.

It does not affect bitcoin or the shape of the cryptocurrency market, but it sure improves publicity, if a world power state is using the blockchain in it's voting system. The blockchain technology has many uses not directly related to cryptocurrency, it's about time we started exploring them.

A voting system and a blockchain that is controlled by the 'ruling' political party. Good luck with that. Russia, since the rise of Putin, only cares about Putin and his constituents, way worse than what happen in Lenin's term albeit not that publicized since they are still on the high seat. I wonder why people think that the word 'blockchain' simply makes things better, when in fact it's sometimes used to mask some irregularities and negativity depending on where it is applied.

I'm not expecting something good to come out of this voting system just because it has the word 'blockchain' stamped on it.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that Russia is not interested in fair and transparent elections. If it does implement blockchain, though, it's a win for Russia and a potential loss for other countries that might go for opposing cryptos for political reasons. Anyway, I am a native Russian speaker, so let's check the news. The vast majority of websites that wrote something in Russian about this are related to cryptocurrencies (so are not official news portals). The article raises more questions than it answers. But the important thing is that blockchain will be used for primany election (choosing leaders inside of the party)! So the party just wants to know for real whom people see as their leaders inside of the party. Kinda reminds me of the Soviet Union 'elections' between the candidates, all of whom are communists  Smiley

I don't think they do. According to an article (in Russian) about it, only those who have verified accounts on the portal of public services will be able to vote with blockchain. They probably won't share the personal data of voters publicly, but I am pretty sure they'll know who voted for whom.
The article says the reason for this is prevention of double voting.

In most countries including russia voting process is private. Only result is public.
There is plenty of ways of using blockchain in the voting process but if with private votes we will publicly see only the amount of votes given for each candidate. In this case you can still cheat with token distribution and some other things. Anyway, you will still be able to buy votes.
With this voting stuff, you have to remain private and get some benefits of blockchain. Which is pretty hard to test on such big country like Russia.
Don't take this news serious.
