Macron is starting a tour of France's colonies in Africa, but is he too late? China has been investing in African infrastructure, and financing commercial enterprises. France just seems to have been supplying weapons, and extracting minerals - they are dependent on the Gabon for Uranium for example. Just as a side note, the US has sentenced Samuel Mebiame a dual nationality French/Gabon citizen to 24 months in prison for conspiring to pay bribes in contravention of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. I'm not sure why the US feels it has jurisdiction over this.
It will be interesting to see if Macron can recover influence in countries where many of the population is learning Mandarin instead of French.

No one knows how America and France think. Despite all, there are common interests and decades between these countries.

Both France and China are willing to use African natural resources. It will not cause any development of African countries. Then why should we care about France here? Situation from Chinese point of view is more interesting. And answering the main question of the thread: Is Macron's tour of Africa too late?
No, he is always welcome in Marseille and many other French cities.

Africa can be considered a Chinese colony now. Most of the infrastructure China is building are roads, bridges and ports - the better able to transport the resources they are craving for and to make it easier to dump their cheap exports (which has already killed off some manufacturing in smaller Asian countries).
Seems no matter who the world power is, Africa still gets the raw deal.

France has the complete power in most of its ancient colonies. France is, truth be told, still a colonial empire though not as big as before. Asia can't do shit and all its investments are just good news for France for a quite good reason: France controls its former colonies both with military and currency. The currency of 8 countries is directly controled by France with the Franc CFA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_African_CFA_francAdditionnaly France has a strong military presence in Africa including Gabon that you were talking about: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_bases_militaires_fran%C3%A7aises_dans_le_monde#GabonWith even more bases than USA in Western Africa xD Basically Africa is for France the same thing as South America for US.

France and China can actually help each other to colonize the African territories. Last time, I have seen a video about China letting countries to borrow from them and if the country will not be able to pay on their dealt time, China will take a piece of their land and will build a structure to be considered as an investment for long term purposes. We can't tell that France's Marcon's tour is too late because, in fact, they are actually ahead of the time. If they will set an alliance with China, they would be the best partner.

You do realize French is still a legal language in most of African countries, meaning it is taught in school? This is not the case for Mandarin, or even Chinese in general.

I remember the last time the British and French helped each other help themselves and how well that turned out for the entire world until now.
