Hi,

I’m not an expert in Bitcoin or transferring them from wallets etc. I have BTC on a flash drive that I’m attempting to upload or transfer to a wallet on an exchange to sell for USD.

If anyone could offer some advice or help that would be great! The wallet is on a usb but idk what program or app to open the wallet with. I’m using a Mac if that makes a difference.

Thank you very much!

What do you actually have on the USB. Is it a private key only or a seed written down or wallet file of some sort? That's going to dictate what you need to do.

Whatever it is I'd transfer it first to a conventional wallet under your control and then transfer to the exchange.

You need to first tell what the termination of the file is on your USB.

One thing I can tell you, this USB has no Bitcoin. They are all in blockchain. What you probably have is a wallet.dat, this file can be opened by installing the latest version of BitcoinCore Wallet. It is important that you tell the exact format of the files on this USB. But never transfer to anyone and do not continue this conversation on PM. After saying which file it is, we can help here in this post.

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for the quick replies! I can’t find help anywhere. Yes it’s file saved as wallet.wallet on the usb.

I started to download Bitcoin core wallet but it’s going to take 15 hours for the entire 223gb of blockchain to dL. If bitcoin core is the only way, I’ll download it again.

I downloaded Electeum wallet to see if I could use that.

Sorry guys! Wish I was more tech savvy to make this easier for you guys.

Thanks Vit05 and gentlemand! You guys a huge help rn

Just to double check, it's a wallet.dat file? They're usually encrypted with a password. If that is the case can you remember what that password is?

Downloading the entire blockchain is less of a grind than your machine indexing it which may take several days. If it is a wallet.dat there'll be lighter options than that.

Gentlemand, I’m really computer illiterate so bare with me please! Sorry, . The file is saved as wallet.wallet, that’s about all I know. I can’t seem to open it with any programs or apps. Guess I need to wait on bitcoin core to fully download to open the file (wallet.wallet) with the bitcoin core app.

I haven't heard of a wallet.wallet file before. Could it be a Multibit file?

Bitcoin Core will create wallet.dat files. Perhaps someone else will pop along who has heard of it. No matter what's happening, make sure you're fiddling with this on a machine that's nowhere near the internet. You really don't want to expose anything to the net.

"wallet.wallet" does indeed sound like it might be a MultiBit file... possibly MultiBit Classic.

OP, do you remember if your original wallet application looked something like this:

If it did, recovering the funds will require a little bit of work, as MultiBit is no longer developed or supported. As such, you wouldn't be able to send your coins directly from MultiBit... however, you should still be able to install it, start it up, open your "wallet.wallet" file and then export your private keys. You could then then import those private keys into another wallet like Electrum.

From there you would be able to spend the coins and send them to an exchange etc.

Yes, if the extension is .wallet it was most probably associated with MultiBit or MultiBit Classic. Here is a confirmation of that - https://fileinfo.com/extension/wallet
