It sounds like you are at square one.  Before you worry about what coins are profitable (which changes by the minute) or what hardware you need I would definately do more research on the subject before you blindly jump in.  Start with asic mining or GPU mining and that should give you enough to research in the beginning.  Good luck Smiley

I concur... You definitely need to figure out if you want to go the asic or GPU route.  If you're going GPU route, I can say that Nvidia cards are less of a hassle than AMD.  AMD are cheaper and if you do the proper research on how to bios flash, overclock these cards then you have an opportunity to buy cheaper cards and get good performance out of them.  Nvidia (1070s, 1080s, 2060, 2070 and 2080) cards usually out performs AMD (RX560, 570 and 580, 590) cards when mining certain coins.  Vegas are really good cards but carry a higher price and not as supported by various mining softwares. The extra money spent on Nvidia should get you higher performance on majority of coins.  If you choose to do GPU mining, I would purchase older generation cards that are used.  That way your rig overhead doesn't take as long to ROI.  You can find really good cards for half the price used on ebay and other trading sites.  There are plenty of threads on this site and youtube videos that will help you set up rigs and set up mining software to mine whatever coin you want.  There are also sites that can steer you to what coin is most profitable to mine with whatever equipment you decide to purchase.

This is just my opinion based on my experience.  You and others may have differed.   I have 1 AMD (12gpu) rig and 1 Nvidia (12gpu).  The Nvidia rig was more expensive but way less of a hassle to overclock, keep stable and switch coins based on available mining software.

Good luck!

Try mining with the CPU of your PC. That's how I started. It cost me nothing to use the PC, I already had.

Have you assessed on how much the cost of electricity in your place? mining isn't for everyone especially if you have an expensive cost for electricity. It's either you can earn a bit or break even with what you mine but it's still up to you on how you'll look at it. Good luck with mining with either ASIC or GPU.  Smiley

No it cost you in a depreciation of your computer and electricity consumption. And it is a pain to mine on home PC in 2019. Please don't mock your PC

Well, of course it won't be profitable. But it is a cheap way to learn and get knowledge required to start properly.

Best advice is usually: Google and read about it, play a bit with your CPU and setup some altcoin miner before you should even think about going bigger and potentially invest hundreds of $ in (specialized) hardware.
In case you already have a suitable GPU in your PC: Give that also a go.

It is an advantage that the GPUs are cheaper now. There are a lot of step by step videos available on YouTube how build up a  RIG. It is suggested to setup with the basic settings and do the fine tuning later.

You are absolutely right mate that we should research more and more before try to start any subjects and especially for mining.
