In episode one of the second season of the Netflix sci-fi series OA, we are introduced to the cryptocurrency Ethereum.
Around 5 minutes into the opening scene of episode one, we meet an older homeless immigrant woman, who needs help from a private inspector, she doesn’t look like she have any money, but when she was asked for money, she quickly navigates on her Smartphone and find her Mobil wallet, where she has $31.000 of Ethereum. We are then told that Ether is virtual money, a digital currency just like Bitcoins.

“What’s ether? Is that some kind of, like, digital currency? Is it like a bitcoin?

Without making any spoiler, we later learn that ether is used as prize money, smart people can win on a Smartphone game, the better they are,  the higher the payouts.

“What’s ether? Is that some kind of, like, digital currency? Is it like a bitcoin?

To start with this is the link of their ANN thread years ago. Dated back to January 23, 2014.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=428589.0

You can read their ANN thread to learn more about it or visit their website ethereum.org

It's a cryptocurrency just like Bitcoin. Its already used by many cryptocurrency users today to trade and even to buy stuff online.

I seriously doubt that you need to explain to anybody what ethereum are here on bitcointalk?

Netflix is a great platform to introduce cryptocurrency. Their subscribers apparently already know bitcoins, and now Netflix introduces the altcoin ether to their hundreds of millions of subscribers worldwide.
The way people in the series was earning ether was from a game, young people already know digital money in games, and later on, they will use cryptocurrency as a natural thing.

What's the point of posting such thread here with that kind of Subject title? You can put it on Off-topic if you want to talk about Netflix.

it is great to see these types of programs come out recently that are covering cryptocurrencies. i just hope they don't turn into a hype and advertisement of different altcoins just because the creators have some stake in that altcoin and want to make profit.

in this case i really hope they cover things such as centralization of Ethereum, its premine, the lack of immutability and other issues on top of explaining what it is and what it does.

Mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency has every once interest here, so this is the correct bord for this subject.
The subject title is where to find the series, name of the series, and a question ask in the series. I doubt you read what I posted after the subject title?

The series is not about crypto, but about near dead experience and parral universe, but they also find time to show how the unbank woman can be her own bank, eth is mention 4 or 5 times in episode one of season two, and blockchain are mention one time in episode two, I still haven't seen the last 6 episodes of season two, as I remember it, there was no talk about crypto in season one.

Is this based on real life story or just a fictional ?
Anyway it's a great way to broadcast the cryptocurrency into worldwide.

Seriously Netflix? I almost spend my leisure time watching on netflix. I am now finshing hunter x hunter, later on I will try what that movie is talking about. So the ether we know and talking about not is the same the ether on Netflix right? If it is then it is awesome. These kinds of scenes are often in movies that are made by large company such as Netflix. One time I saw the movie where Bitcoin Mining is said to be cool by the main characters. It was awesome when I grasp the clip and played it a couple of times, I don't know why but felt like there is still a hope when a I see the clip "Bitcoin Mining is Cool".

Nice copy paste post https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/b4h6gj/ethereum_in_a_netflix_series/
archived for future references.
Plagiarism and copy paste is not allowed in this forum. Be careful your account can be banned because of this behavior.

My first line on Reddit

"I made a thread on bitcointalk some might find interesting"

I think it clear that I made that post on Reddit, I even start to claim that I made the post here, I also use the same username here on bitcointalk and on Reddit, how can this be Plagiarism?

Sorry deleted previous post, I thought it was a copy paste post from reddit but after looking at the username seems that you are the same guy with the one who write it on reddit.
Since it is a discussion about Ether, it is better to be moved to altcoin discussion board as here is a board for bitcoin discussion. TY

All good, and great spotted. Plagiarism is something we should take very seriously, and I would never take any credit for other peoples work. The reddit timestamp is also around 2 hours after the first post here.
The photo is taken from my tv so that probably belongs to Netflix, but it is not even a screenshot, but a cama photo taken of my smart tv, so that should be within fair use.
And no it's not an Ether discussion, but a general discussion of the use of crypto in a Netflix series. Bitcoin and blockchain are also mentioned, just as a use case of banking the unbank are shown.

This is 100% fictional and scifi, and pure entertamint.

I agree, this is a pretty good idea. And giving it a futuristic like approach would make anything with Cryptocurrency in it, really cool. I also like that approach of the story, ultimately it's not how you look like but how you really are, right?

I also believe that Crypto will be used as a natural thing. In fact, precisely targeted the most towards young people, this is a very cool site where they allow you to pay with some Cryptocurrencies. Make sure to read if what you're buying is for the UK/Europe or US/America first, i know that it is a thing with WoW: https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/

I personally like Ethereum as much as Bitcoin even if i will only invest in the pioneer.

So if we are talking about serials then I also remember BTC was featured in Mr. Robot when there was a kind of crisis and all shops were accepting cryptocurrencies.
Unfortunately in all movies cryptocurrencies are shown either as a money for criminals or just a geek currency. In both cases there  is no good usage for normal people.

It was also mentioned in another Netflix series, casa del papel.
It was also used by criminal activities.

Just remembered another on, on the series billions. It was used to avoid taxes.

However, even though it's used as a money for criminals it's good to see it on TV shows. Cryptocurrencies need more visibility. Soon we will see people using Bitcoin legally in movies.

Back in 2017 we could see various of reports about crypto market on every TV channel and all over the internet and it was only useful to hype over it and get some money. Even with this crazy visibility crypto could not become somehow more adopted into our lives. It is not about visibility.

He (or she) wanted to talk about connection with Netflix & cryptocurrencies. And it is important to use Ethereum in their series. All world can watch it in Netflix and awareness will be raise!

Cryptocurrency is commonly mentioned on TV series and movies nowadays. I have seen it mentioned in Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy and a lot more. It does not surprise me when it is mentioned anymore.

What surprises me is that OP is surprised about ETH being in a tv show and wants to talk about the tv show. Obviously, this should be in Off-topics.

This is great this will probably help mass adoption. I like how they thought of using a cryptocurrency and not create their own stuff. But anyone knows why it is not bitcoin in the first place?
