First time miner here. Built a potato out of spare parts.
GeForce GTX 460
650W
Windows 10
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHZ
8GB Ram
Striker 2 Extreme Asus motherboard

Just curious if I can mine altcoins on such a cheap build, or just wait and buy better cards (Which I already plan on doing).

Where I live the electricity is cheap.

Try this one https://minergate.com/ but dont expect for considerable profits even if you do have cheap electricity.  Grin

With a Core2Duo and a GTX460, there are no other options aside from Minergate that stomachgrowls suggested or the one I will recommend you.

But I highly doubt that mining service's...~ service, beside the fact that you'll probably earn cents per day, most of your mining income will just go to the site and your "referree".
But you got no choice, most mining software won't even mine using that GPU.

Or Try to mine Cryptonight coins using this: [CPU][XMR] Monero CPU Miner
The author claimed that it's optimized for SSE4 processors like Core2Duo/Quad with 50% more hashrate.
The code was clean based from the last review but there have been a lot updates happened since then. (I can't vouch for the security).

Your system specs are not bad but your GPU is useless in mining anything.

Just go on eBay or Craiglist and for like $75 or so you can get a used RX 470 4GB and you can mine ETH with it or XMR CN R. After a few months if you get bored, you can probably sell the GPU for the same price you paid. And most likely the GPU will still have some form of warranty since they are not that old.

Nvidia GPUs are faster and more efficient but they are usually more expensive since they had a higher MSRP and there is more demand by gambers for them. With AMD you can get a fairly good deal and especially the RX 470/570.

This. You'll get a few quid for that gtx460 too. You won't make any 'profit' mining with an RX unless your electric is free, but you will at least see some results. I have a bunch of RX cards FS in the UK if you're interested...

This is pretty cheap build but I think you can mine shitcoin to hold for a long time and sell them at the right time.
However, most of the mining software not support lower GPU's I don't know if this card still supports mining other altcoins.

You can use these tools to know which GPU is best for mining altcoins.

For the future, CPU power isn't a big factor in mining speed. A CPU like the Core 2 Duo you have is fine for mining, though if you do choose to expand in GPU mining you'll want a newer motherboard that has more PCIe slots so you're able to run more GPUs on a single motherboard and CPU. Any Radeon 400/500 GPU is decent for mining and they should come pretty cheap nowadays as many miners are offloading their cards due to a drop in mining profitability. The R9 300/200 series isn't bad if you've got free electricity, though the older Radeon cards use significantly more power while mining than the newer RX series cards.
