From what I know the malware was spread in the last 3 months. So you may already have it, and me too, as a matter of fact. What I will do later today is to boot from an USB stick that'll contain antivirus, and do a full scan from that. Just for sure.

If this was true then there are many people who are at risk when they updated their laptop. ASUS should make some clarification about this matter. I`m glad to not use any laptop at the moment.

I don't used AUS laptop, but this is serious matter. We really need to be careful out there, everything is fucked up and those hackers really mean business. Everyone should run anti-virus just to be sure specially those ASUS users.

I'm ASUS user, but I had never done any updates since I bought my laptop last year so lucky me. Obviously it makes me a bit worry, but I will wait for ASUS to clarify about this issue. Hopefully it is just a rumor and no significant loses from ASUS users.

I use a Sony laptop but my phone is an ASUS. Hopefully I won't get problems there - only updated it once.
They should patch this up immediately. I don't think this is an inside job though, I don't remember the company being accused of actively installing malware on their products like some brands.

Maybe this is a serious problem that Asus users should watch out for. Is this malware a bitcoin wallet hacker for Asus users? because I also used an Asus laptop for more than a year. please explain that.

57,000 affected users is already a large group of people if you'd ask me. Good thing I have disabled automatic software updates on my Zenbook as I know OTA updates are susceptible in being affected by such hacks and malware (aside from trying to avoid a huge data volume charge for exceeding my monthly mobile limit, lol). The Zenbook that I have has a lot of my financial accounts stored, and I seldom connect it to the internet except when sending and receiving transactions via crypto or via banks. I know it's not a good move but hey, might as well use a spare laptop for storage and secure it rather than leave it hanging around.
Also, this goes to everyone and not only exclusive to ASUS users who have their wallets and important data stored on their machines: always disable auto OTA updates as we don't know when things could go wrong.

The malware from the own production system is not good. Anyhow the issue through the update tool is really a big effort from the hackers, because it'll easily get into the laptop as the update goes without a red flag. It enters with the Asus security certification, and 57000 laptops getting affected is a big number. Asus have requested to disable update.

Nothing, in the Motherboard article they say they will issue a statement regarding this later today... Is this malware a bitcoin wallet hacker for Asus users? because I also used an Asus laptop for more than a year. please explain that. It's a backdoor malware, alone it is harmless until the hackers decide to play around with your computer and then it can pretty do pretty much everything. But this is not affecting all Asus laptop owners, but only those who have Asus updates (not windows) still turned on. My older i3 laptop isn't even getting those anymore.

Did you check all mac addresses (physical) you get from CMD window? I am not sure this tool can provide correct information is user infected with malware or not, but it seems that hacker/s are targeting specific mac addresses. Asus is patch this exploit, but it remains to see how infected computers will be cleaned, just by antivirus scans or there will be need for a special tool. It is important to emphasize that users who have Asus devices are not necessarily affected by this exploit, Asus Live Update need to be enabled to this hack works. I use automatic update only in my antivirus, everything else is set to "notify me but do not download it automatically", which is quite a reasonable measure for those who takes care of the computer security.
