I have noticed my electrum wallet is version 3.2.3 while the latest version is 3.2.4.
Latest version is 3.3.4... you should download it from here:

i am worried loading a new version will wipe the slate clean.
Uninstalling Electrum will not remove your wallet. It won't "wipe the slate clean"... and in any case, you can easily recreate the wallet from your 12 word seed mnemonic. So, prior to upgrading, ensure you have your 12 word seed mnemonic safely written down. You can use the "Wallet -> Seed" menu option in the wallet to display your seed again if you don't have it written down already.
At the moment my wallet still hasn't picked up the transaction, will updating to the new version fix this?
Yes, the old version is the reason you cannot see your transaction. As stated on the Electrum website:
Warning: Electrum versions older than 3.3 can no longer connect to public servers, and must be upgraded. This is in order to prevent user exposure to phishing messages. Do not download Electrum from any another source than electrum.org.
Updating to the newest version will resolve your issue.
I fear already sending the bitcoins to an old version has made me lose those coins...
You have not lost your coins, they are recorded on the blockchain... so if you upgrade, you will see your transaction once the wallet is able to connect to the servers and sync properly.
