Hi Fellow bitcointalk members,

Hope you all are doing well. I have recently purchased a new laptop with Core i5 (8th Gen) and Nvidia Mx150 graphics card. Even though I am veteran in trading, I am new in mining and never tried to explore the mining opportunity because I never had a great piece of hardware. However, with my newly purchased laptop, I decided to try it and installed minergate software because it looked easy to operate!

While I am trying to mine ETH through the minergate software, the maximum hashrate I am getting is around 412 KH/s using 7 cores of my CPU. See the screenshot below,

However, when I am trying to mine XMR with the same configuration, I am only getting 80 H/s speed. Please see the below screenshot,

Why I am not getting the same speed as ETH mining while using the same 7 cores of my CPU? Can anyone please help me understand? I have tried to search Google and it seems like it is due to different mining algorithm, but not sure! Also can anyone suggest me a profitable coin to mine with the above mentioned system configuration? Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Avikz

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

ETH using Ethash algorithm while Monero uses Cryptonight-R for the hashing algorithm, so when you mine both of them your miner will produce different hashrate for sure.

Since you do mine using a laptop it can cause overheating, so you need to adjust the fan speed and the number of threads (the number of cores) to lowering your energy consumption and reduce heat temperature.

For mining profitability, you can take a look here https://minergate.com/calculator/cryptonote , but I think CPU mining is not profitable nowadays.

Not worth it to mine with laptop it might lead to melt your CPU socket including other parts near CPU due to high temperature.

Minergate is another 3rd party software like nicehash.

Any coins you are trying to mine has different algo so they don't give you the same hashrate because they have different algo.

With your laptop specs, I think there is no profitable coin to mine with this machine may be in some shitcoin and hold them for a long time and sell them at the right time.

You will burn your laptop very fast if you continue to mine with it and it is not worthy because mining with your cpu and your mobile gpu only makes you pennies compared to the value of your laptop.

If you are a veteran in trading I presume you can easily buy a 4 graphic cards rig to experiment with mining.

Like everyday has said here already, every coin has a different algo which is differently programmed and it hashes at different speeds.

That's why there are many miner ASICs and some hash at 1TH/s and while others at 100GH/s and yet use the exact power consumption.

Your ETH speed is very bad since its a CPU, with a cheap $75 GPU you can get 30 MH/s and mine ETH. However you will need power less than 8 cents per kwh to make a profit and by profit, I mean like make a nickel.

Also you should never mine with your laptop on 100%. You will heat it up and eventually cause the battery to explode due to the heat and also laptops in general have bad cooling. Get a desktop if you want to do this.

Pretty much mining is not profitable at all, doesn't matter what ASIC or GPU or CPU or FPGA you have, nobody is making decent profit these days.

As people said, different algo different outcome.

But besides that, i don't think it is a great idea to mine with a laptop. They are not good for mining and that can end up with a broken laptop for you.

Totally agree. The cooling system in laptop is not that good and the price for replacement will be much more than you can potentially mine

I understand the fact! Thank you for the information. It was indeed an experiment and I am happy with my trading activity!

Thanks for the information mate! I am not planning to pursue mining with my laptop. It was just an experiment to understand how much hash power my laptop makes. It certainly overheats even after 15 minutes of continuous mining so I uninstalled the software itself. I am happy with my trading as it generated a decent amount of money for me.

Was mining using Daggerhashimoto - now ethash - on my laptop and the heat gave me the scare of my life. Thought I could "casual" put my gaming laoptop to some sort of us by mining something. Wounded up giving up and hiring a rig instead

was there any profit? Because a total system power consumption is too high for a system with a single gpu card,  and you should have really low electricity price to have profit at the end.

Good call, it's not really worth it to use lappy's for mining whether they are called 'gaming laptops' or the powerful ones. It isn't capable on what the usual miner / GPU does. You can be a jack of all trades (miner and trader) but if I'm on your shoe, I'll pursue trading.
