Based on my 10 minutes of Googling, though I don't know if this is the first light wallet, it definitely looks like one of the oldest: MyBitcoin[1]. Unfortunately based on what I've read, it looks like they did a sort of exit scam sometime in 2011.

the wiki page describes a little bit about how they ended the services, basically claiming that they got hacked. not sure about the truth of this, but it was described that the rest of the funds that were not 'hacked' were returned to their users.

anyway, another source to please op curiosity: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/4j0xjx/list_of_early_webbased_bitcoin_wallets/
though technically it is not possible to be independent of full node afaik.

There is a lot of misinformation about the history of Bitcoin on Wikipedia, especially in the early days.
For example, the first exchange was not Bitcoin Market but waybackmachine.

I think the old members will give you more information about the first online wallet but all are told as per them old.

you can try to ask @BitcoinFX I think he knows more.

Well, to be fair, it's not farfetched to think that exchanges use this excuse to cover themselves. Not saying they really did an exit scam though, I definitely wasn't in the bitcoin space at that time.

For example, the first exchange was not Bitcoin Market but waybackmachine.
What? Waybackmachine is an exchange? Or did I misunderstand what you're saying?

If you curious about MyBitcoin, you can check https://web.archive.org/web/20110211102154/https://www.mybitcoin.com/

What? Waybackmachine is an exchange? Or did I misunderstand what you're saying?

I think he was looking for first exchange which archived on Waybackmachine and got confused.

FYI, AFAIK the first exchange is New Liberty Standard, you can check it at https://web.archive.org/web/20091229132610/http://newlibertystandard.wetpaint.com:80/page/Exchange+Rate

Also the question has turned to be about web wallets, when I was thinking it was more about SPV wallets (Electrum-like).

OP was asking for online/light wallet though
