sup people, i ran into a very strange problem with these used S9s 13.5th batch i got, all of them have the same exact problem.

when i try to flash a new firmware , the miner shows "update successful" and then restarts itself "normal" but when i try to login  with either root/root  from browser ,or root/admin using ssh nothing will work, i have to physically power the miner off and on to be able to login again, and once i do, the same old firmware is there still.

i did a hard reset for all of them and now they seem to have factory default firmware.

but the same problem is still there.

things i tried

1- resetting using both IP reporter and pin "no different tho, because i know the reset worked"
2- i tried almost every single firmware for S9 from bitmain website

that's all i could attempt before i ran out of time, and had to go take care of something at home, so i left them running on default firmware which works just fine except that temps are higher on this batch than  the rest mainly because of the firmware difference.

has anybody had a similar issue? what do you think the possible cause?

It might be a program corrupted it just like the same issue as "413 - request entity too large" you might need to flash the miner through SD card but the problem Bitmain does not release antminer s9 image files.

The only solution that I know might solve this issue is to send them back to the manufacturer if it still under warranty or if the warranty is expired you can flash it through SD card but with other firmware like Braiin OS which is well-known as the last solution if your miner is bricked or have a problem that related to a software issue.

Hey thanks for responding Bitmaxz

This is not a problem with 1 or 2 miners , there is a quite a good number of them that have the same problem "all of this batch to be clear". this can't be a random issue.

The weird part is after failing to flash, it still mine to the pool with no problem, it shows on awesome-miner as well, working perfectly, but all types of connections are refused, can't even restart it via ssh command.

I have 1 of 21 s9s with that problem

Try to do a static ip for it.

You are having a dchp conflict.

Another method is get a cheap router

Say your router is 192.168.0.1

Get a second router 192.168.1.1

Route the miners on that but use a pc on that router.  Not the original router.

Phil  , this has nothing to do with ip addresses , they all have static ips to begin with. I am certain this is not a network problem.

Phil  , this has nothing to do with ip addresses , they all have static ips to begin with. I am certain this is not a network problem.

okay try using DHCP on them with a router that alters the  addresses ie 192.168.0.x     vs 192.168.1.x  put a pc and the 'bad' miners on that router you add and see if it works

I have 1 weird s9  it does not work well on

the solar array network at buysolars house that router is 192.168.1.x  = more then 40 addresses used on the router
the solar array network at clifton       that router is 192.168.1.x          = more then 90 addresses use on the router

yet it is fine in my home that router is 192.168.0.x  = only 15-18 addresses on the router.

the biggest difference in the 3 networks  is the amount of miners on the routers

the miner gets lost on two of the three networks
yet works fine on mine.

for your problem, i think DHCP will solve it, also setting the the ip address for the miner to 192.168.1.x and netmask to 255.255.255.0 at home and taking it to your farm will also fix the problem.

but that's not what i am having here, if it was a networking related issue i would have known " I do this for living" .

anyway i think i solved the problem, i brought one of them home and tried a different way of flashing and it worked, will try it on the rest asap and report back here, i am 90% sure this method will work on all of them but i need to test it on the rest first.

thanks a lot phil.

Yeah I had some that would only flash using a chrome browser and windows 10.

OK i tested the method on all other gears and it worked, it's pretty strange i have no explanation for how it works, i hope someone could point out the technical aspect behind it.

what i did to solve the issue was as follows;

1- Reset the miner using the IP report button  by powering off the miner, keep holding the ip report button while turning the miner on,keep pressing the button for about 5 to 10 seconds, then let go for the button.

2-you need to immediately flash the firmware as soon as the miner's ip appear on your router, and by immediately i mean 15-20 seconds max, if you wait a bit longer than that it won't work.

* trying the above after pin reset or a normal reboot will not work, flashing will show successful , then it won't let you log in until you physically power off then on , and the old firmware will still be there.

thanks @BitMaxz and @philipma1957.
