Goal
Reach a conclusion about Mark Karpeles trading activity on mt.gox. Expose lies. Identify possible insiders and curiously work to understand the bitcoin market, who caused major crashes and rallies. Identify good/bad traders and their effect on the market.

Need help to:

  • Plot Mark Karpeles trading history on a graph showing the price related to his trades
  • Figure out if Mark Karpeles was losing 220k btc by making bad trades (please note that trading logs from 2011-04 to 2013-11 only were released, we don't have all data)
  • Identify Mark Karpeles involvement in major crashes and rallies.
  • Study dates with major market movement, can we identify other insiders by looking at the trading history?
  • Can we plot large volume traders usernames/userid on a graph of the bitcoin price?

How can you help?

WTF!

Mark and Gox in 1st and 2nd worst place!

I hadn't thought of that, but it's a distinct possibility that Mark Karpeles simply traded away everybody's coins!

Just for the record: is not my site nor I'm involved in any way with it.

There has been people asking about removal of the e-mails: Keep in mind this information was already public (it comes from the 2011 hack)

F*** me though, of course we all know most of the coins are held by a few people but seeing it in front of your eyes ...

"Lost 500BTC on Gox" was the public announcement from Ver

But I never heard "Bought 97,000 BTC on Gox" before today!

When you see how these guys run about now buying all the Bitcoin start ups at seed stage you can see how easy it is for them eh? A few hundred btc here, another few hundred btc there. Cornering the entire market while it's young. Incredible.

No, I can't. This specific Gox's client data is disabled: http://mark-karpeles.com/m.php?page=trades&user_id=115248 This is the only account that I am interested to investigate.

Need help to:
  • Plot Mark Karpeles trading history on a graph showing the price related to his trades
  • Can we plot large volume traders usernames/userid on a graph of the bitcoin price?

Only tradingview has technology to do so. Someone should contact them. Not sure if they would do it for free. It could be a great advertising for them though.

I could do some of these if I get all the data in excel. Bear in mind that although some of the data were confirmed by Gox's client as true and exact, the database may contain errors.

One insider is this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=492776.msg5613018#msg5613018

I understand in order to be on that list one had to be goxed at the end,  namely have a non zero balance in either BTC or a fiat currency.

The list doesn't show trading losses. It just shows who sold a lot of coins for cash.

There are lot of coins sold by Mark early in 2011/2012 to pay the stuff for the company. Probably his own coins or the bitcoin fees?

I am a little confused. I though Magical Tux (the nickname) = Mark Karpeles (the person) and Magical Tux (the nickname, whoever owned it then) opened Mt.Gox (the exchange, which wears his name, Mt.). And now I see Mark bought an existing company but owned the nickname from the begining. How is this add up? Was he a partial owner from the begining and bought the shares of others later?

I think this list is a scam. I personally had two verified accounts on Mt.Gox but their balances don't show up on the list! Huh

If you were sitting on fiat on the day this list was created, your account would probably not show up, I think.

One method of assessing the quality of this list would be to have a list of trades of the most profitable account at Gox (which is disabled from viewing Huh) and then find the corresponding losing account(s). The finding of the losing account(s) is fairly easy (a 5 minute analysis work). If such losing account(s) cannot be identified, then this list is partially a fake.

What is thought to be Karpeles' account might be in fact Miss Whale's losing account. Could Karpeles' job in this whole operation be to perform losing trades? - I don't know. We need a complete list of accounts and trades executed for the last year.

If we have such a complete list, the culprit of Gox's collapse can be identified fairly easy and quick, and the findings handed out to prosecutors.

MtGOX = Magic the Gathering Online eXchange

It was a Magic cards exchange originally.

This article claims that Mark used funds stolen from a client to buy it:
Quote
Again, if accurate the most interesting part of this report is that this alleged theft is its correlation in timing to the partial purchase of Mt. Gox in March 2011.  If accurate, it is highly probable that Mr. Karpelès turned around and used these (basically) stolen funds to buy MtGOX from Jed McCaleb.

The list isn't scam. If you are not on it it could mean you had less than 10 BTC on your account, the list starts from 10 BTC and more.

The usernames and email adresses come from the 2011 hack, the accounts without had been created after the 2011 hack. The other data (user id, balance, last login) come from the latest mt gox leak. When it says "No trades found" it means the bitcoins have been bought after 2013-11, because the leak contains only transactions till that date. Edit: "No trades found" can also mean, that there haven't been any trades, but the coins have just been deposited into that account.

Check that list http://www.acceptbitcoins.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/mtgox_balances.csv, maybe you find yourself on that. If not, your data got lost, maybe. It's contains every gox account from the leak.

Who the fuck is Miss Whale?

A person who controls a traded instrument. On traditional markets this person needs to have about 50% of the assets to move the market (less if very smart). It is easier to move the market in bitcoin world, therefore no need for a high 50% control.
